Traders in Uganda will be barred from selling and importing second hand underwear garments if government is to pass a new bill being pushed by Civil Society activists.
Worldwide African Congress[WAC] a pan African organization on Wednesday petitioned parliament calling for a ban on used undergarments and other second hand goods on account that they are unhygienic.
Handing over the petition to the clerk to parliament, Mr.Mayambala Wafrika an official from Worldwide African Congress said that government needs to give its citizens first priority in the awarding of contracts so that they can grow their potential to boost local production.
The petition demands for barn on panties, nickers, brassiers, vests and night dresses.
The clerk to parliament Mrs Jane L Kibirige informed petitioners that their petition would be forwarded to the legal department for drafting before it will be presented to parliament for consideration.
Petitioners proposed a legislation to provide incetives ,tax breaks and favors to local business, barn on importation of second-hand underwear and ensure that public sector contracts are reserved for local entrepreneurs unless there is no local capacity to deliver the good or service.
Once the bill is passed into law, many Ugandan traders and entrepreneurs may be affected as many deal in second hand garments especially underwear.
