Victoria University’s freshly introduced Master of Science in Health Safety and Environment Management has received an additional credibility boost, from The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) in the United Kingdom.

IOSH is the world’s Chartered body for safety and health professionals. It is the largest membership body for health and safety professionals, that champions occupational safety and health causes as well as advises governments, NGOs and policymakers around the world. It is also the leading voice on the issues affecting the safety, health and well-being of people at work across industry sectors and around the world.

Through research and consultation with its members in 130 countries around the world, IOSH also develops and influences policy positions and standards on occupational safety and health globally.

“We now have a Master’s Degree in Health, Safety & Environmental Management and it is accredited by the UK Institute of Occupational Health and Safety. This is the only IOSH-accredited degree in East & Central Africa. We join ranks with Birmingham University, Heriot-Watt University and Middlesex University,” the university tweeted on its official Twitter account.

The accreditation means that Health Safety and Environment Management graduates from Victoria University will be recognised and can work anywhere around the world.

“Be assured of jobs! Employers are looking for people who can identify, evaluate, and communicate information about workplace and environmental conditions that may have adverse impacts on human health. Be part of the next well-placed graduates,” the university further tweeted.

Victoria University Vice-Chancellor Dr. Muganga, said accreditation is within Victoria University’s pursuit of International quality education at flexible and affordable terms to African families.

In an interview with CEO East Africa Magazine, Dr. Lawrence Muganga, the Victoria University Vice-Chancellor said the accreditation is proof of the high quality and standards emphasised by the University.

“What being accredited by the IOSH means, is that our programmes are of international stature. A Ugandan student or student studying here can pursue a course of the same quality, the same standard as a student who is doing a similar course at a University like Oxford which offers the same course. That is the kind of education and education standard that Victoria University is providing in this country,” he said.

“To ensure that our degrees are internationally accepted, and are of an international quality we take an extra step to ensure that we get our courses to be accredited by internationally renowned accrediting organisations. We want to have our students pursue degrees that are pursued by the same students who go to Harvard University, or the University of Toronto, Canada; the difference only being the jurisdiction or institution and maybe the course instructors and lecturers. That is why we are going the extra mile to get our courses tested and accredited internationally,” he added.

Victoria University is the first university in the region to offer the much-sought-after Health Safety and Environment Management course in the East African region which has recently been discovered and is at various stages of developing its oil and gas resources.

The course is of nine new post-graduate courses introduced by the University. Speaking at the recently-held 6th graduation ceremony, the University’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Lawerence Muganga, said that the other courses include:
