MONEY, PEOPLE & POWER: The 10 bank CEOs that control 80% of Uganda’s banking sector In 2019, eighteen of the twenty-five commercial banks made combined profits of UGX906 billion- a 14 per cent rise from 2018. Total assets for the banking sector rose by 16.2 per cent to UGX32.9 trillion on account of increased lending with the loan book expanding by 11.5per cent to UGX14.3 trillion. Customer deposits also rose by 18.4per cent to UGX23.3 trillion in 2019. This however does not tell the whole story. Of all these parameters, the top 10 banks control 83.2 per cent of net profits, 81per cent of deposits, 83 per cent of loans, and 82 per cent of assets going by the compiled results from the 2019 performance.
