Centenary Bank has appointed seasoned banking executive Michael Opira as its new Executive Director, Operations, marking a significant leadership shift as the institution strengthens its top management structure.
Opira joins from Housing Finance Bank, where he has served as Chief Operations Officer (COO) since 2021, bringing with him over two decades of deep experience in banking operations, technology, and strategic transformation.
He started work on April 1, 2026.
His appointment comes at a time when Centenary Bank’s board is implementing recent governance and structural changes aimed at reinforcing executive leadership capacity. Under these changes, Opira becomes the second Executive Director at the bank, joining Joseph Balikuddembe, who has been serving in a similar capacity.
The move signals Centenary Bank’s intent to sharpen execution at the highest level as it consolidates its position as Uganda’s second-largest bank by deposits, assets, profitability, and lending, among other key performance indicators.
At Housing Finance Bank, Opira played a central role in driving operational efficiency, digitization, and technology-led transformation, overseeing critical functions including ICT, operations, customer experience, and administration. He was also instrumental in shaping the bank’s strategic direction as a member of the Executive Committee.
Prior to that, he spent nearly eight years at Ecobank Uganda as Head of Operations and Technology, where he led the delivery of secure and scalable banking platforms while supporting regional assignments across multiple African markets.
With over 27 years in banking, Opira’s career reflects a steady rise through the ranks—from branch-level roles at Centenary Bank, where he broke his banking teeth, and Housing Finance Bank in the early 2000s, to leading complex, multi-functional operations across some of Uganda’s most prominent financial institutions.
He now returns home to Centenary Bank—where he began his banking career in 1999—bringing with him deep institutional insight and a wealth of experience. He is expected to play a pivotal role in driving operational excellence, enhancing customer experience, and accelerating digital transformation as the bank continues to expand its footprint and sharpen its competitive edge.
His comeback to Centenary Bank—where his banking journey first took shape—adds both familiarity and strategic depth to his mandate, even as expectations remain high for delivering impact at scale within one of the country’s most systemically important banks.
