Tembo Steels (U) Limited has been crowned the Overall Best Exhibitor 2022 at the 28th Uganda International Trade Fair and Exhibition.

Welcoming the accolade, Manish Kalla, the company General Manager said, “This is East Africa’s largest integrated steel plant that has forward to backward integration of steel.”

Tembo Steels recently commissioned a $200-million iron ore smelting plant in Iganga, eastern Uganda with a capacity to process 1.2 million tons of metal annually.

It is one of East Africa’s largest companies with an interest in manufacturing hot and cold rolled profiles, Strategic investments made by the company have resulted in the creation of tangible & intangible assets which are at the heart of the Ugandan economy.

Recently, the minister in the office of Vice-President Diana Mutasingwa, commended the company for improving the quality of life in the local community by deliberately picking its workforce from its location.

According to her, 90% of Tembo Steels employees are Ugandans of whom 80% are derived from Buikwe where it operates.

The Company Chairman Sanjay Awashi said that the company does not import raw materials for steel bars and other steel products which include iron sheets, nails and others, but rather utilises scrap and iron ore from Kabale.

“We remain committed to producing commodities which benefits the community.”

Uganda spends over $360 million annually on the importation of steel, with at least 70% on coils and billets products. About 30% is spent on finished iron and steel products, the firm said.
