Makerere University has announced a partnership worth UGX200m with NBS Television Limited where NBS will offer live coverage, documentaries, news features, talk shows and digital media coverage. 

The commitment will go towards supporting the university’s year-long anniversary celebrations, which were launched in November 2021 during a stakeholder mobilization event organized by Makerere. The University has planned activities which include Public lecture series, a centenary conference, the Centenary run, Homecoming Dinner to mention but a few. 

Opening its doors to 14-day students in 1922, Makerere University has grown to become one of the most prestigious learning institutions in Africa. 

NBS Television is a leading 24-hour multi-content channel broadcasting live from Kampala, Uganda. NBS TV started in mid-2007 drawing on candid reflections of successful television networks worldwide. It reveals lessons for creating, nurturing and growing experience and accumulated understanding of a local television network. 

In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of Makerere University, Professor Barnabas Nawangwe highlighted the institution’s contribution. He noted that the contribution of Makerere to humanity is enormous and should be celebrated.  “Currently, there are people from 54 countries studying at the university. Our contribution is not just local but global.” He added, “The best way to celebrate these achievements is to tell the story to everybody. We are glad that NBS has partnered with us to tell that story.”

On his part, Next Media Services’ Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Kin Kariisa shared his history with Makerere saying that he spent seven years at Makerere University. Three years as a student in which he was the Guild Affairs Minister and later as teaching staff at the College of Computing and Information Science until his departure in 2007. 

Through NBS Television, Kariisa promised to amplify Makerere University’s story of excellence by publicizing its research, innovation and authenticity over the last 100 years.

“We are going to promote messages that call for people to come back to the institution and rebuild it.” He added.

He also mentioned that out of 450 staff at Next Media Services, 300 of them have been through Makerere and in top management, all 14 members including a Kenyan have studied at the university.
