The East African region has made tremendous achievements in terms of investments in internet infrastructure. Over the past 5 years, the region’s bandwidth has multiplied 20 fold while terrestrial networks have doubled in the same period. This was revealed at the East African Internet Infrastructure forum that began today. The event which is organized by the Internet Society, East African Communication Organization, Africa Telecommunication Union and The ministry of ICT in Uganda is being held at the Kampala Sheraton Hotel.

Speaking at the sidelines of the forum, Dawit Bekele the Director of the African Regional Bureau of the Internet Society said, “Six years ago we did not have a fiber sub-marine cable reaching the coast of East Africa. Today we have 5 of them and are leading the continent in investment in infrastructure. We have made remarkable efforts as a region and although internet penetration is still slow, we should not focus on the negative.
