Fresh from just winning the Kinyara Golf Open which took place in Masindi from the 13-15 November, Meron Kyomugisha has her eyes set on the prize to repeat her the same display this weekend when the Equity NARO Golf Open tees off at the Mary Louise Simkins Memorial Golf Club, Namulonge.
Kyomugisha was victorious at the same tournament in 2022 and believes, it’s her time to take her crown back, “This is the tournament that wraps up the year, 2025, has been good to me, and I have put in a lot of work strengthened my short game by working on chipping and putting, improved on the course management by strategically playing the course. So I’m sure I can bring this home.” A delighted Kyomugisha told this newspaper.
The tournament in its fifth year has so far attracted over 120 golfers and will be played under the theme, swinging to 17 Years of Equity Bank Growth, which will be in celebration of the 17years of Equity Bank’s success, impact, and partnerships in Uganda’s financial sector.
The Mary Louise Simkins Memorial Golf Club which will host it has earned a strong reputation as a breeding ground for emerging golf talent in Uganda. Located within the country’s largest agricultural research center, (NARO) the 9-hole 70 par course provides an ideal environment for training and skill development.

“This year’s tournament is not just another edition; it carries with it a deep and meaningful milestone. Equity Bank is celebrating 17 years of serving the people of Uganda.
Seventeen years of growth, partnership, innovation, and shared prosperity. Seventeen years of walking hand in hand with individuals, families, and businesses to transform lives and livelihoods,” said Claver Serumaga, the Executive Director of Equity Bank.
Among the new twists this time is that the Gross players will play alongside the men. They will kick on Thursday with 36 holes, then complete the 18 on Friday to make it 54 holes. The subsidiaries and the Seniors will be playing for Trophies, These will play for Shs 5m, then the pros will compete for a coveted Shs 10.

The highlight of the tournament will be the 17th hole which is going to be specifically branded, in line the bank’s celebration and also have special giveaway’s to handed out to players at the hole.
Timothy Lwanga Club Captain was delighted about the tournament, “This is historical to us because as Namulonge we will be celebrating 75 years, but also, for the club it shows how far working with the right partners goes to developing sports in the country. Equity has supported us through this journey and we have set in motion plans for having a fully fledged club house in the near future.”
By press time, Professionals from Zimbabwe and Kenyan had confirmed their arrival and participation in the tournament.
