This June 2025, VCON Construction, the engineering and construction arm of the Ruparelia Group, marked a pivotal milestone by handing over the newly built USD 13.5 million Faculty of Engineering and Technology at the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) in Mbale. Accompanied by a 500-bed student hostel, this project was not just another job—it was a symbolic breakout: VCON’s first major non-group public-sector project, firmly cementing its emergence as one of Uganda’s top 5 construction firms by portfolio size and complexity.
IUIU Engineering Faculty: The Breakout Project
The engineering faculty, financed through the Islamic Development Bank and completed in just 22 months, showcases VCON’s capability to deliver high-spec institutional infrastructure outside its traditional domain of luxury and commercial real estate. With designs by Symbion Consulting Group and execution aligned to international quality benchmarks, the facility will soon host programs in civil, electrical, mechanical, and computer engineering — positioning IUIU as a new hub for STEM education in the region.
“This is a demonstration of our technical capacity and commitment to quality,” said Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia, Chairman of the Ruparelia Group. “We believe this facility will enhance educational access and development in Eastern Uganda.”
With this project, VCON officially joins Uganda’s league of heavyweight contractors — alongside Roko Construction, Seyani Brothers, SMS Construction, and a handful of others.
Reshaping Kampala’s Urban Future: VCON’s Signature Projects
For over a decade, VCON has quietly redefined Kampala’s skyline through iconic, high-value developments. Today, the firm’s footprint stretches across Uganda’s most transformative real estate and hospitality ventures.
1. Pearl Business Park – Yusuf Lule Road
One of Uganda’s most ambitious private-sector developments:
- A massive 18-acre, multi-tower, mixed-use park.
- Phase One, Tower One, is a 19-floor Grade A office block with 24,000m² of premium lettable space and parking for 360 vehicles.
- Nine more towers are planned, including retail, medical, and hospitality components.
2. Kabira Serviced Apartments Expansion – Bukoto
This project will position Kabira Country Club as Uganda’s largest extended-stay complex:
- 360 high-end serviced units across more than 100,000m².
- Includes squash courts, restaurants, a shopping mall, bowling alley, and business hub.
- All units are built to British standards, appealing to long-term leisure and corporate travelers.
3. One-10 Apartments – Kololo
The most luxurious for-sale residential property in Kampala to date:
- 156 premium apartments and 13 penthouses.
- Spread across two towers, units range up to 240m².
- Amenities include a gym, pool, café, secure parking, and sweeping panoramic city views.
4. Speke Resort Convention Centre – Munyonyo
Now Uganda’s flagship for MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions):
- Constructed in just 12 months.
- Hosts up to 19,000 guests with 3,800-seat convention hall, 33 meeting rooms, 5 ballrooms, and 476 accommodation rooms, including 59 presidential suites.
- Strategically integrated within the existing 105-acre Speke Resort Munyonyo complex.
Supporting Projects That Cement VCON’s Clout
VCON has also delivered several landmark developments within Kampala, including:
- Kingdom Kampala Mall – 10 floors of top-grade retail and office space.
- Electrical Plaza – 220 shops and 56 residential apartments in downtown Kampala.
- Speke Apartments Wampewo, Kitante, and Bukoto Heights – Stylish, fully serviced residences catering to urban executives and long-stay guests.
- Bukoto Living and Tagore Living – Boutique residential projects that elevated mid-tier luxury standards.
Paradise in Progress: Nature Meets Construction Excellence
Outside of urban Kampala, VCON is also constructing the Paradise Island Resort on Lake Victoria—a 19-acre luxury eco-retreat accessible by boat from Munyonyo. The development includes cliffside cottages, villas, and natural trails, and underscores VCON’s growing venture into tourism infrastructure.
From In-House Contractor to Industry Leader
Until recently, VCON primarily built for Meera Investments and Speke Group—both subsidiaries of the Ruparelia Group. But the successful delivery of the IUIU engineering project proves VCON is now a construction firm in its own right, competing with—and often outperforming—Uganda’s traditional giants.
In 2023 alone, VCON was handling over 11 large-scale projects concurrently, a feat requiring robust technical capacity, human resource depth, and financial resilience.
VCON is No Longer in the Shadows
Uganda’s urbanisation demands speed, scale, and sophistication—and VCON has risen to meet the challenge. Its transition from group-exclusive contractor to top-5 national construction brand marks a strategic evolution. As Uganda’s infrastructure ambitions grow under the National Development Plan III, VCON is uniquely placed to shape the cities, skylines, and sectors of tomorrow.
From education to hospitality, luxury housing to megaprojects—VCON is no longer just building structures. It is building Uganda’s future.
