Tourists enjoying their stay at Ishasha in Queen Elizabeth National Park on October 19. UTB has assured tourists that Uganda is safe despite an attack on tourists on October 16.

Uganda remains a safe and secure country to tour despite the fatal attack on two tourists and a local tour guide in Queen Elizabeth National Park by unknown individuals, the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) has said.

In a statement, UTB’s Chief Executive Officer,Lilly Ajarova, said the October 16 incident does not reflect the overall safety standards of Uganda’s tourism destination sites and was an isolated incident.

She assured that law enforcement agencies are investigating the incident thoroughly to bring the perpetrators to justice.

“Tourism remains a vital pillar of Uganda’s economy, and we are fully committed to maintain and improve the safety and security of our visitors. Queen Elizabeth National Park, in particular, is recognized for its breathtaking landscapes and diverse wildlife. All tourists are encouraged to continue visiting Uganda and its various attractions, including Queen Elizabeth National Park, while taking necessary precautions and adhering to the guidance provided by authorities. Tourists should continue to enjoy their experiences in this beautiful park,” Ajarova said.

President Museveni has already said that the country will not spare any effort in bringing the perpetrators of this heinous crime to book.

The incident sent chills down the spine of tour operators who are still reeling from the Covid-19 induced lockdown and ebola breakout which impacted on the sector.

The sector last year earned the country $736 million but UTB has set a target of $5.2 billion by 2028.
