The past two decades have seen several women venture in to big businesses in Uganda’s economy. Much of this ‘women emancipation’ has been attributed to changing global trends, the current government’s deliberate effort to empower and uplift the status of women in society and the women’ determination to actively engage in the country’s development instead of remaining on the sidelines.
Even though many posts in both the public and private sector still have a majority male population, the number of women taking up top positions continues to grow each passing day.
Platforms like Uganda Women Entrepreneurs Association Limited (UWEAL), MTN Women in Business, TradeMark East Africa plus a few others have come in handy as they offer women with endless opportunities to further develop their skills and use them for economic transformation.
Today, there are many businesses either owned or ran by women. These employ thousands, feed very many families and pay billions in taxes.
It is December and indeed the festive season is on. Instead of waiting for March to celebrate the strong women making and shaping the future of Uganda, we have chosen to dedicate to them the birth of Jesus Christ.
The 2017 most powerful women in the private sector business are those that have taken centrestage in navigating a fast-changing business environment even amidst multiple challenges.
Like Forbes recently wrote; “As they tackle these challenges, the female executives are also developing opportunities for other women to follow in their footsteps.
