The National Social Security Fund (NSSF) has earned value from the 373,771,921 shares purchased from the power distributor Umeme Limited, NSSf Managing Director Richard Byarugaba has said. Power distributor Umeme is closing 2020 on a high note after completing the $83.3 million planned expenditure despite challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. Uganda’s main power distribution utility Umeme has tabled a $219 million (UGX813.2 billion budget) for 2021. Of that, $119 million (UGX442.4 billion) will be for capital investments in the grid while $60m (UGX222.4bn) will cater for net operating costs. The company says it will spend $2m (UGX6.6bn) on lease payments and the balance ($38m/UGX141.8bn) on an assortment of other items. It will invest in the evacuation of Karuma and Acwa hydropower plants, on improving power supply and expand the network.
