For quite a long time, the sprawling and magnificent Metroplex Shopping Mall, in the upscale Naalya suburb along the Kampala Northern By-Pass highway on the outskirts of Kampala city, has raised a lot of questions about its viability as a major real estate investment. A recent online debate on the X social media platform placed the shopping mall into a critical spotlight with some commentators voicing their concerns about the ’emptiness’ of the mall as a proverbial white elephant. A tour of the mall reveals some vacant space, low foot traffic, and a lack of vibrancy in shopping and entertainment experienced…

By Cem Perdar In February and March 2021, I visited Nigeria and Kenya respectively for business purposes. Among the important things that caught my attention during these visits was the clear increase in the number of motorcycle couriers on the roads and the abundance of advertisements for e-commerce applications. Online trade in Africa has rapidly grown in recent years, and this trend is expected to continue. In my view, various factors contributed to the impressive growth of this business model. Population of Africa is the youngest in the world. So, there is potential for a massive digital audience. Also, Internet…

By Michael Jjingo Change is real! Many people doubted the migrating of Television programs from analogue to digital, even after appreciating the spin offs that were to follow; crystal clear pictures, better sound and others. Today, most of the church collections are analogue! Let’s not forget that the churches have been one of the most affected sectors, due to the continued lock down, which has kept away the believers, particularly those that were donating and fending for the church survival. Whereas some churches have over time been desirous of using Digital means to collect offertory, tithes and other donations, there…

Uganda’s merchandise trade deficit widened by 50% from USD 269.25 million in April 2021 to USD 322.17 million in May 2021, reflecting stronger import demand. Compared to May 2020, the deficit widened by 123%. This is according to the June 2021 performance of the economy report released by the Ministry of Finance Planning and Economic development. Mobile money was the proverbial financial mask shiedling the entire country when movement was at its lowest and fear of infection at its highest. The life altering announcement by President Museveni limiting movement of people around the country and closing the nation’s borders to the world meant that people could not travel to take or receive money and food to their loved ones. So for many, mobile money was the saving grace that even with the looming danger of a deadly virus, their loved ones far away would have access to money to pay for food, shelter and medicine. Benjamin…

By Nathan Were It has been one year since the Covid-19 pandemic hit the world. It has destroyed livelihoods, shuttered people’s dreams, and sunk businesses. The containment measures that followed the onset of the pandemic have been more disruptive than the disease itself. One sector that was predicted to suffer from the aftermath of the pandemic following lockdowns and restricted movements, was microfinance – a sector that mobilizes small savings and extends microloans to micro and small businesses, largely operating in the informal sector. Earlier predictions had shown, that the pandemic would wipe out many institutions’ equity and lending capital…

It is now one year since you assumed leadership of the Ugandan unit of Coca-Cola Beverages Africa – what has the year been like? My time in Uganda so far has been great! I am enjoying the friendly climate, welcoming people and the beauty across the country. I have visited many parts of the country and agree with the phrase, ‘The Pearl of Africa’. The last year presented challenges for all of us around the world, which became an opportunity for us to prove ourselves. We kicked off 2020 with a pledge to unleash our full potential and in the…
