Roselyn Vugutza Amadi, Independent Director Kenya Maritime Authority

PROGRAMME: Women Directors Leadership Program

Roselyn Vugutza Amadi, had had a very successful career as a civil servant. During the course of her career, she had among other roles, numerously represented the Kenyan Government in many United Nations fora and other international and regional meetings as State Counsel. She retired in 2015, as Acting Deputy Solicitor General.

“During my working life, I gained a lot of experience as a Director in several State Corporations ranging from Capital Markets Authority, Privatisation Commission, and Kenya Railways among many others,” she says, adding, “but on retirement, I thought my public contribution was over.”

But all this changed when she started attending training at the  Strathmore University Business School.

“My journey to my true self began when I became aware that my purpose does not end with official retirement. This came about through the various trainings, especially at Strathmore Business School, which are modelled on the premise that every one of us has a purpose and gift to fulfil that purpose,” she narrates.

“In particular, the Women Directors Leadership Program opened my eyes to possibilities that I had never thought about. For instance, that I needed to leave a legacy and that I could deliberately change my life story at any time to success and impact,” she adds.

Indeed her life story has changed and she continues to impact and serve her country as an Independent Director of the Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA)—a semi-autonomous agency in charge of regulatory oversight over the Kenyan maritime industry.

“Being an Independent Director has given me the freedom to grow my skills further not only as a negotiator but also how to deal with board dynamics in a changing environment,” she testifies, adding: “Strathmore Business School has given me the ability to mature in my thinking and emotional intelligence and become aware of using and improving my God-given skills to make a better world for future generations in all aspects of my life.”
