All roads lead to the expansive Speke Resort Munyonyo this Sunday, October 16th for the celebration of the Diwali Food Festival.

Diwali, also known as the festival of lights and is one of the major festivals celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs. The festival usually lasts five days and is celebrated during the Hindu lunisolar month Kartika (between mid-October and mid-November).

Symbolising, the spiritual “victory of light over darkness; good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance”, it is one of the most popular festivals of Hinduism.

The festival is widely associated with Lakshmi, goddess of prosperity and Ganesha, god of wisdom and the remover of obstacles.

During Diwali, people wear their finest clothes, illuminate the interior and exterior of their homes with oil lamps and perform worship ceremonies of Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity and wealth. They also light fireworks and partake in family feasts, where sweets and other gifts are shared. Diwali is also a major cultural event for the Hindu, Sikh, and Jain diaspora.

“There will be 52 food tents, music, a children’s corner and fireworks. All the rich cuisines of the Indian Sub-Continent will be there,” organisers said in a statement, adding, that gates will be open at midday.
