President Museveni has lauded Uganda Airlines after flying with the national carrier yesterday on his way to Tanzania to sign oil agreements.
On his twitter handle, the President said: “I had not flown using the @UG_Airlines, until yesterday. The crew is very good. When they were landing, I did not know we had landed.”
He added: “Regarding the alleged corruption in the airline, some elements in management and the board MUST face the consequences.”
Oil warning
Speaking in Dar-es-Salaam, Museveni warned the Uganda and Tanzania governments against forgetting about other sectors which supported economic development in the two countries in favour of the newly found oil and gas.
He noted that oil is a finite resource unlike agriculture, hence the two countries must use the oil to develop agriculture and not to replace it.
Museveni was speaking at the signing of the host government agreement between Tanzania and the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) at the State House in Dar-es- Salaam on Thursday, 20 May 2021.
The signing officially marked the launch of the works on the 1,410km pipeline which will run from Hoima in Uganda to Tanga in Tanzania.
“I would like to caution the Ugandans and Tanzania not to get intoxicated with this petroleum and forget the other sectors. This is the mistake the other (oil) countries have made. Sectors like agriculture and industries should be supported by this oil,” Museveni said.
He added: “Petroleum is an exhaustible resource whereas agriculture is not. Let’s use this finite resource to build the other durable sectors. As you have heard, there is a lot of money which we can get and use it to enhance the other sectors and by the time the oil is finished, you find that you are now at a different level of development.”
His Tanzanian counterpart Samia Suluhu said the pipeline will go a long way in improving the livelihoods of the people of Tanzania, since the biggest chunk of the pipeline will be in the country.
“As you know we have a debt of creating over 7million jobs in these five years and this project will be of great help in achieving that,” she said.
