Moses' nearly two-decade banking career continues to shine

After spending 14 years at Standard Chartered Bank Uganda, the amiable Moses Rutahigwa has been appointed as the new Consumer, Private and Business Banking Head at Standard Chartered Bank Botswana.

He has been serving in the same role, in Uganda since January 2021.

Moses’ started-from-the-bottom career at the bank saw him start as a Branch Manager in 2010, rising to become a Regional Branch Manager in 2013 until January 2015 when he was appointed Head, Strategic Transformation, a role he played for a year. In February 2016, he was appointed Head, Client Acquisitions until September 2017, when he became the Head, Client Acquisitions and Relationships.

In January 2019, he was appointed Head, Retail Banking until January 2021 when he assumed the Head, Consumer, Private and Business Banking (CPBB) role.

The Consumer, Private & Business Banking division is the retail and SME banking equivalent unit of the bank. It serves both individual clients and small businesses, with more focus on the affluent and emerging affluent.

During his time as head of this unit, Moses has championed the digital-first agenda⏤ harnessing the power of technology to offer world-class deposits, payments, financing, and wealth management solutions to our clients. Under his leadership, the adoption of digital services has grown healthily, with 93.2 per cent of transactions and 86 per cent of service requests in 2022 (from 75 per cent in 2021) happening through non-branch and digital channels respectively.

In 2022, he also led a 15% growth in income from affluent clients. Income from affluent clients contributes 60% of the CPBB unit’s income. In the same year, clients’ Wealth Assets Under Management crossed the UGX500 billion mark, having grown 46 per cent year on year. Under him, the Personal Banking segment grew by 15 per cent with balances of digitally acquired clients increasing in 2022 as well. Business Banking income also grew 14 per cent.

Before Standard Chartered Bank, he spent three years at Barclays Bank Uganda (now Absa Bank Uganda).

He holds a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from Makerere University and an Edinburgh Business School, Heriot-Watt University.

Moses joins a long list of Ugandans working for the global bank in various countries such as Herman Kasekende, CEO, Standard Chartered Bank Tanzania; Agnes Umutoni, the Head Retail Products, Segment and Client Experience role at Standard Chartered Jersey as well as Yustus Aribariho, the Global Head, Digital Utilities.
