The government has been urged to boost online learning to ensure that children continue their routine studies despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic or other unforeseen challenges that could occur in future.
Presently, the majority of public schools in Uganda lack internet facilities and as a result, many pupils cannot access online learning after all schools were closed in a Presidential directive meant to curb coronavirus infections.
Daphine Kato, the Principal at Kampala Parents school says that it’s important for children in both private and public schools to continue learning and that the government should support efforts to provide the necessary facilities.
Kato made these remarks during her speech after receiving the 2020 PLE results in which 129 out of 186 candidates who sat from the academic centre passed in grade one with aggregates ranging between 4 to 6.
Kampala Parent’s school was one of the few schools that ensured continuous learning through using online platforms which Kato says helped the school a lot.
“The situation was not so normal but we had to give our best, online lessons helped a lot because if we had not had them, we could have not have had such results. I urge the Government to increase efforts and promote E-learning because we do not know when the pandemic will end. E-learning is a very helpful and healthy option because both teachers and the pupils stay in their respective homes,” she noted.
The School head expressed her satisfaction towards her pupils’ performance, acknowledging that it is quite remarkable considering the unusual tough conditions that her pupils had to endure during their final year studies and national examinations.
“The results have been released; the general performance is very good. Given the difficult time, to see our pupils performing like this is really wonderful, we thank God and the parents that really cooperated with us to get this kind of performance.” said Daphine Kato.
