Stanbic Uganda’s Chief Executive, Anne Juuko will take up her new role as Standard Bank’s Regional Head, Global Markets, this April, CEO East Africa Magazine, can exclusively reveal.

According to our insider sources at Stanbic Bank, her new role, although it has been in the corridors and subject to much speculation will be announced next week.

It is not yet clear whether her replacement will be announced at the same time.

She has been Chief Executive of Stanbic, Uganda’s largest lender, for exactly four years, having assumed leadership in March 2020, at the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic in the country, and the subsequent lockdowns and economic crunch that followed.

Despite being her first time as Chief Executive of a bank, she profitably led the bank through the two years of the pandemic and the period after.

She is the second Ugandan after Patrick Mweheire and the only woman to lead the bank in its 118 history in Uganda.

The bank was founded in Uganda as the National Bank of India in 1906 and after several name changes, it became Grindlays Bank. In 1991, Standard Bank bought the Grindlays Bank network in Africa and renamed the bank Stanbic Bank (Uganda) Limited. In February 2002, Standard Bank acquired 90% of the then government-owned Uganda Commercial Bank and merged it with the existing Stanbic Bank (Uganda) Limited, forming Uganda’s largest commercial bank ever since.

According to Patrick Mweheire, the Standard Bank Group Regional CE for East Africa and Anne Juuko’s supervisor and predecessor, the Group is “very proud of the exceptional job she has done—leading the business to record-breaking numbers, through what was a challenging period” and “would love to keep and see her take on even bigger responsibilities within the Group”. She has the requisite experience in global markets, having spent the biggest part of her career in the segment, for Citibank and Stanbic Bank in and outside Uganda.

Juuko, who holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda and a master’s degree in Strategic Planning from the Herriot Watt Business School in Edinburgh, Scotland has spent the biggest part of her career in global markets.

She was between April 2009 a VP, Head of Fixed Income, Currencies and Commodities at Citibank Uganda Limited, before heading to Citibank Kenya as VP, Customer Sales and Derivatives Marketing, a role she served between June 2010 and June 2012. She then returned to Stanbic Bank to take up the Head, Global Markets role till December 2017 when she was appointed, Head, Corporate and Investment Banking at Standard Bank, Namibia; a role she took up in January 2018. It is from here that she was appointed the Stanbic Uganda Chief Executive, a role she took up in March 2020.

In a December 2023 interview with Daily Monitor newspaper, Standard Bank Group’s Regional Chief Executive for East Africa Patrick Mweheire tells Daily Monitor newspaper that after a stellar performance, Anne Juuko deserved bigger responsibilities within the group.

“The Standard Bank Group typically works in chief executive cycles of, three to five years and Anne has now done four years, and I can confirm that her term comes to an end at the end of March 2024. We are very proud of the exceptional job she has done—leading the business to record-breaking numbers, through what was a challenging period—with the lengthy pandemic and other factors in the operating environment,” Mweheire said.

“She has led and continues to lead the team well in building our franchise, keeping us relevant in the market and in many ways, also providing trailblazing female leadership across Uganda and the region. We are very grateful for her dedication and we would love to keep and see her take on even bigger responsibilities within the Group. Given the level of confidence we have in her, I would say the next logical step after here would be a regional management role where she can partner with me and support more countries like I do,” Mweheire said.

The Standard Bank Group East Africa region covers Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia and South Sudan.
