The Strathmore The Programme for Management Development targets middle-level managers with a minimum of five years of experience with a capacity for multifaceted leadership

As Strathmore University evolved into one of Africa’s leading business schools, it has added layers to subjects like economics, finance and management, in effect, developing a ‘finishing school’ aspect to these various disciplines. The result of this is Programmes like the Programme for Management Development, which targets already existing middle-level managers.

Target Audience

The Programme for Management Development targets middle-level managers with a minimum of five years of experience with a capacity for multifaceted leadership, who are looking to improve their ability to face challenges and improve their decision-making processes to enable their advancement and the prosperity of the company they work for, or own.

Why Invest in the Programme for Management Development?

One might wonder why an already existing middle–level manager needs such a course, but the benefits for the ambitious middle manager are quickly obvious and significant, making it a worthwhile investment in one’s future.

The course is designed to enable middle-level managers to consolidate their positions, by imparting them with the knowledge and skills that enable them to maximize their array of tools at a professional and personal level.

It is also a rare chance to pause from the rat race that defines the business and management world and to take stock. Surrounded by their peers, this is an opportunity to gauge one’s approaches to the business world, and to share ideas within a deliberately curated selection of participants.

Benefits of the Programme for Management Development

Once you get past the question of why a middle-level manager needs this sort of Programme, you are faced with the question built around why you should take on Strathmore University’s Programme for Management Development. The Programme is built around several compelling aspects that studiously answer this question.

Case-Based teaching methodology. This method focuses on real-life business scenarios, which significantly improves the decision-making skills of the participants in the course.  Because of this methodology, their capacity to immediately impact their current posting and for greater leadership responsibility is improved.

Approach. An important aspect of Strathmore University’s approach to holistic education is the partnerships it has with other global business schools and the corporate world, and how it incorporates this into its programs. For instance, the Programme for Management Development has several modules that are hosted by the Gordon Institute of Business in Johannesburg, South Africa. This has the advantage of broadening the scope of the peer-learning experience and location for the participants in the Programme, while also lending it a significantly more cosmopolitan edge.

Networking. A lot is made of the peer-learning process that these sorts of Programmes offer but this Programme harness it even further: participants are deliberately curated to include senior executives from a variety of industries and locations to lift the level of knowledge and experience of the discussion process that defines the peer learning process of the Programme.

Faculty. The faculty that delivers this Programme is diverse in the knowledge, experience and skill it imparts and effective in application. Faulty members include those from Strathmore University, those from the partner business schools and successful businesspeople, many with their own business consulting firms, offering real-life experience and lessons regarding the business world, from an international perspective.

A participant in this Programme should expect comfortable class sessions; class size is limited to an exclusive few.  Alongside this, the lectures are interactive and engaging, with a process that involves analysis and acquisition of new knowledge.

The Programme is designed to hone a participant with middle-level management capacity into top-tier management material, because of the way it broadens the participant’s strategic and managerial perspectives while improving their ability to meet challenges as well as their man-management skills.

While also enabling participants to reinforce their credentials for the positions they currently hold within their various management portfolios, it also offers them the opportunity for career introspection, a window of self-evaluation and self-improvement in terms of their management style.

Programme Structure and Delivery

There are four one-week modules in the Programme for Management Development, with three of them held at SBS, and one held at the Gordon Institute of Business Science in Johannesburg, South Africa.

After an orientation period that outlines the Programme journey, the methodology, the study environment and the coaching approach, the participants are introduced to the four modules that encapsulate the Programme:

Module I: Understanding and Managing Yourself and Others in the Organization

Module II: Working Towards Excellence

Module III: Executing and Monitoring Strategy

Module IV: Navigating Obstacles and Speed Bumps in the Journey towards Excellence

The Application Process

While applications for admission are accepted throughout the year, all applications are reviewed by an admissions committee to ensure the suitability of the Programme to the applicant’s needs, after which, the applicant is advised accordingly.
