Delayed Compensation Slows Construction works on Rukungiri-Kanungu-Ishasha Road

The delayed compensation of over 1,000 residents of Kikongi parish in Bwambara sub-county in Rukungiri district has slowed the tarmacking of Rukungiri-Kanungu-Ishasha road. 

President, Yoweri Museveni commissioned the tarmacking of the 78.5km road stretched valued at Shillings 207.8 billion in December 2018. The project is being executed by China Henan International Corporation under the supervision of Uganda National Roads Authority-UNRA. 

The project is co-funded by African Development Bank and government of Uganda under the road sector support project V-RSSP V. The road works were expected to be completed within a period of 3 years. However, the delayed compensation of the Projected Affected Persons-PAPs has delayed the progress of the works. 

Sayuni Bernada, one of the affected residents in Kikongi parish, says he will not leave his house until he is compensated.         

Doreen Kyoshabire and Liberty Kisakyakatonda, both residents of Kikongi parish say their pieces of land were marked and valued last year but they haven’t received any compensation.     

The Rujumbura County Member of Parliament, Fred Turyamuhweza, who is also the Chairperson Rukungiri Roads Committee, called for calm from residents noting that he has already notified UNRA to expedite the compensation of residents. 

He assured residents that the compensation exercise will commence in August this year since UNRA is expected to receive money next month.

“Our people who have been affected and are supposed to be compensated before they vacate their premises for the road construction to continue will all be compensated by end of August this year so that they can vacate and the contractor continues construction off the road,” Mr Turyamuhweza said.

The Rukungiri Woman Member of Parliament, Betty Bamukwasa Muzanira asked residents to prepare their documents including the National IDs for a clear compensation exercise.
