Morning arrives quietly at Lake Mwamba. Mist lifts slowly from the water, birds stitch sound into the stillness, and the surrounding hills hold the silence like a secret.

Here, time does not rush; it settles. Nyanja View Resort exists in this unhurried rhythm — a place where rest feels earned, nature feels intimate, and departure feels premature.

An open-air pool retreat where wide views and layered greenery create a calm, unhurried atmosphere.

Instead, it invites you in softly: endless views, mirror-still water reflecting the sky, and a calm that feels deliberate.

“The views that stay with you,” reads the resort’s tagline, and standing above the lake, you quickly realize this is not marketing language, but a promise.

Born of the crater lakes

Nyanja View Resort officially opened its doors in November 2024, making it one of the newest additions to the Fort Portal tourism circuit.

Despite its youth, the resort feels deeply rooted, both physically and philosophically, in the land around it.

“We are located right at the edge of a volcanic crater lake,” says Kevin Muheshwroho, Head of Marketing and Reservations at Nyanja View Resort.

“Lake Mwamba is very special. It has a crater bed surrounded by hills, forests, and wildlife. You don’t just look at the lake, you live with it.”

The resort sits in Kasenda Town Council, Kimya Village, within Fort Portal’s famed crater lakes region. Here, the land rolls gently, the air stays cool, and nature seems to breathe at its own pace.

A resort designed around views, not walls

What sets Nyanja View apart is its intentional openness. The lake is never hidden. From nearly every angle, your cottage balcony, the restaurant, the swimming pool, or the gardens, the water finds its way into your line of sight.

“Everything here is about the experience,” Kevin explains. “The landscape, the lake, the service, we want guests to feel welcomed, relaxed, and remembered.”

Lake Mwamba, one of more than 40 crater lakes in western Uganda, lies at the centre of a richly layered landscape of hills, farms, and rural communities — the setting that makes Nyanja View Resort both immersive and distinctly Ugandan.

The resort currently offers five cottages, thoughtfully spaced to preserve privacy while maintaining uninterrupted views.

Each cottage has two levels: a double room on the ground floor and a twin room on the upper floor. At full capacity, Nyanja View accommodates up to 22 guests, making it intimate enough to feel personal, yet ideal for families and small groups.

Camping by the lake

For travelers seeking a closer connection to nature, Nyanja View offers well-maintained camping grounds overlooking the lake. Guests may bring their own tents or use those provided by the resort.

The experience is simple yet powerful, falling asleep to the sounds of water, waking to mist lifting off the lake and birdsong filling the air.

“If someone camps here,” Kevin says confidently, “they will have one of the best experiences of their life.”

Family-friendly, without losing the magic

One of Nyanja View’s strongest appeals is how seamlessly it caters to families without sacrificing serenity.

“This is a family-friendly resort,” Kevin notes. “Whether it’s a holiday, a vacation, or just time away, what matters most to us is how happy our guests are when they leave.”

The pool area flows seamlessly into the resort’s open-air spaces, blurring the line between structured comfort and the surrounding landscape.

Children have safe space to explore, parents have room to unwind, and families come together, especially around the infinity-style swimming pool overlooking the lake.

“Imagine sitting in the pool, sipping a drink, with the lake stretching out in front of you,” Kevin says with a smile. “That’s the feeling we wanted to create.”

A playground of nature and adventure

Staying at Nyanja View is not only about rest, but it’s also about engaging with the landscape. Guests can enjoy:

  • Boat rides on Lake Mwamba (motorboat or canoe)
  • Canoeing for a slower, more meditative experience
  • Guided nature walks led by local experts
  • Hiking across the surrounding hills
  • Visits to Mahoma Falls, where guests can swim and explore cascading waters
  • Excursions to Lake Nyinambuga, famous for its serene beauty and featured on the back of Uganda’s UGX 20,000 note
  • Coffee, vanilla, and cocoa farm tours that connect visitors to the region’s agricultural roots

The area is also a haven for bird lovers, with over 100 bird species, including kingfishers and cormorants.

Lake Nyinambuga — the iconic crater lake immortalised on Uganda’s 20,000 shilling note — remains one of Fort Portal’s most photographed and celebrated natural landmarks, and it lies just minutes from the resort.

“You hike, you explore, you work your muscles, but you enjoy every step,” Kevin says. “Nature is the motivation for you.”

Food that becomes a memory

Ask Kevin about his most memorable moment at Nyanja View, and he answers without hesitation.

“I’m a food person,” he laughs. “The food here, I will never forget it. The taste, the dishes, the experience.”

The resort’s restaurant serves international cuisine, blending local favorites with Western, Asian, and European dishes. A skilled chef leads the kitchen, ensuring that every meal is as memorable as the scenery.

A well-stocked bar completes the experience, perfect for evenings by the campfire or beside the pool.

Culture woven into the experience

At Nyanja View, luxury and culture are not separate; they are intertwined. Over 70% of the staff are local, and most activities are guided by members of the surrounding communities.

Cultural storytelling is also reflected in the resort’s design. Kevin points to the fabrics, furniture, and décor in the restaurant.

Set within one of Uganda’s most concentrated crater lake landscapes, Nyanja View Resort is surrounded by over 40 volcanic lakes, including Lyantonde, Kifurukwa and Nyinambuga — all just minutes away.

“These materials come from a woman called Nyinambuga, believed to be the mother of this lake,” he explains. “It’s a belief, a myth, and when you believe in it, it becomes real.”

This deep sense of place, where story, land, and people intersect, is what gives Nyanja View its soul.

Easy to reach, hard to leave

Despite its secluded feel, Nyanja View is relatively easy to access. From Kampala, travelers drive to Fort Portal and take Kamwenge Road. Just one kilometer from town, signposts guide visitors to a right turn, followed by a scenic 20-minute drive into the crater lakes region.

“Just follow the road,” Kevin says. “Your instincts will lead you here.”

Looking ahead

Though still young, Nyanja View has bold plans for the future.

“We’re planning to add four to five more cottages by the lake,” Kevin reveals. “We want guests to feel like they’re sleeping on water.”

He laughs before adding, “If Jesus walked on water, our guests will be sleeping by it.”

Expansion will come with care, more cottages, deeper experiences, and greater immersion in nature, all without compromising the calm that defines the resort.

Floating at the edge of the property, the pool looks out across a vast crater lake landscape, where hills roll gently into the horizon and nature sets the pace of every new day.

At Nyanja View Resort, mornings begin with birdsong, days unfold slowly, and evenings settle gently over the lake.

Monkeys may visit your balcony if the doors are left unattended. The water mirrors the sky, the air feels cleaner, and time feels kinder.

This is a place to stay, pause, connect, and remember. True to its promise, the views really do stay with you.
