Anita Rukundo Tayebwa, wife of outgoing Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa, has been appointed Honorary Consul of The Bahamas in Uganda, a move that quietly places one of Uganda’s politically connected figures at the centre of relations with one of the world’s most prominent offshore financial jurisdictions.
The appointment was announced by Jerusa Léa Ali, Ambassador and Director General at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, who said the relationship was cultivated during the G77 and Non-Aligned Movement summits hosted by Uganda in 2024.
“We first met in the margins of G77 & Non-Aligned Movement Summits hosted by Uganda in 2024 and we are now proud to welcome Anita Rukundo Tayebwa as The Bahamas Honorary Consul based in Kampala, Uganda,” Ali posted on X.
The Caribbean nation consistently ranks among the world’s leading offshore financial centres and tax havens.
According to the 2024 Corporate Tax Haven Index, The Bahamas ranks 11th globally among jurisdictions enabling corporate tax minimisation and financial secrecy.
Honorary consuls typically play a non-career diplomatic role focused on promoting trade, investment, tourism and bilateral business relations.
In recent years, Uganda has increasingly sought to position itself as a gateway for investment partnerships beyond traditional Western and Asian markets, including deeper engagement with Caribbean and Global South economies.
