William Sekabembe, the interim CEO, dfcu Bank

Following the resignation last week, of Mathias Katamba from dfcu Bank, the bank has appointed William Sekabembe, hitherto, the bank’s Executive Director & Chief Commercial Officer as its interim head.

“The Board and Directors of dfcu Limited, informs its shareholders and the public that Mr. Mathias Katamba, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of dfcu Bank Limited (a subsidiary of dfcu Limited) has tendered in his resignation to the dfcu Bank Board, effective 31st January 2023,” Jimmy Mugerwa, the Chairman, dfcu Limited said in a 10th January 2023 public announcement.

“In the interim, the Executive Director, Mr. William Sekabembe, will act in the position of Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director,” Mr. Mugerwa said, adding: “The Board, Management and Staff of dfcu wish Mr. Katamba, success in his future endeavours.”

Sekabembe brings to the role 24 years of banking experience, which amongst other key skills, includes business strategy design, execution and review, banking product development and management, development finance, risk modelling, liquidity and balance sheet management, mergers and acquisitions as well as organisational redesign. 

He describes himself as “an analytically minded and proactive team player with extensive practical experience in banking products and solutions development, commercialisation of infrastructure including driving market adoption and revenue growth”. 

Before becoming the Executive Director & Chief Commercial Officer of dfcu Bank, a role he assumed in January 2017, he was the dfcu Bank Head of Corporate Banking (May 2015 – December 2016)  and Head of Consumer Banking (May 2012 April 2015). 

Before dfcu Bank, Sekabembe served as the Head of Products in charge of Assets and Liabilities, in the Personal and Business Banking division (November 2010 to May 2012) at Stanbic Bank, Uganda’s largest bank. Between 2001 and November 2010, he worked in various roles at Barclays Bank (now Absa Bank Uganda) such as Head of Distribution Channels, Head of SME/Affluent Segment, Retail Regional Manager, Senior Retail Manager and Product Manager, among others.

He started his banking career at Standard Chartered Bank as Systems Administrator/Banking Officer in 1999. 

Sekabembe holds an  Executive Master of Business Administration (MBA)  from the prestigious International Institute for Management Development (IMD), Lausanne, SWITZERLAND.  He also holds a Master of Arts in Economic Policy and Planning and a  Bachelor of Science in Economics and Statistics from Makerere University. 

An alumnus of King’s College Budo, Sekabembe, has also completed various professional development courses such as the Effective Director Program,  CEO Apprenticeship Program and The Advanced Leadership Development Program from the Strathmore Business School as well as the Future of Banking Innovation Program from the Amsterdam Institute of Finance. 

He sits on the boards of the Uganda Warehouse Receipt System, Agribusiness Development Centre and the Jubilee Health Insurance Company of Uganda.
