In a significant boost for Rwanda’s climate action and agricultural transformation agenda, Mr. George Mwangangi has been appointed Senior Project Manager of the $50 million KilaMuLa Project, a landmark initiative promoting climate resilience and sustainable agriculture across the country’s western highlands.
A Bold Step for Climate-Resilient Agriculture
The KilaMuLa Project, formally titled “Building Resilience to Climate Change and Sustainable Agriculture Value Chains in Agro-Systems around the Mukura–Gishwati Forest and Lake Kivu Catchment Landscape,” is among Rwanda’s most ambitious environmental undertakings. It focuses on ecosystem restoration, climate-smart farming, and improvedlivelihoods for communities in the Mukura–Gishwati and Lake Kivu regions.
The program’s $50 million investment will be implemented across Ngororero, Rutsiro, Rubavu, and Nyabihu districts, aiming to rehabilitate degraded landscapes, expand reforestation efforts, and strengthen agricultural value chains. By merging scientific innovation with local knowledge, KilaMuLa seeks to build resilient agro-ecosystems that both sustain rural livelihoods and conserve biodiversity.
Meet George Mwangangi, a Strategic and Visionary Leader
Mr. Mwangangi, a Pharmaceutical Strategist with a strong record in strategic planning, sustainability integration, and project implementation across Africa, brings a unique combination of organizational leadership and innovation to the role. His experience managing complex, multi-sectoral initiatives makes him well-suited to guide the KilaMuLa Project toward measurable and lasting results.
“This project is a vital pillar in Rwanda’s journey toward a climate-resilient and sustainable future,” Mr. Mwangangi said shortly after his appointment. “It’s about restoring the land, empowering communities, and building agricultural systems that can withstand the changing climate while creating new market opportunities for farmers. I am honored to lead such a transformative and high-impact initiative.”
Driving Impact and Accountability
Project officials have welcomed Mwangangi’s appointment as a catalyst for efficiency and innovation in the project’s next phase.
“George brings strategic clarity and a results-driven approach that will help the KilaMuLa Project deliver measurable impact,” said a spokesperson from the project’s management team. “His expertise in strategy and implementation will be crucial in translating high-level vision into tangible benefits for Rwandan communities.”
His leadership marks a new chapter for the initiative, one emphasizing performance, local empowerment, and sustainable impact. Mwangangi’s disciplined, data-driven background is expected to enhance project delivery and introduce stronger systems of accountability and innovation.
Alignment with Rwanda’s Vision 2050 and Green Growth Strategy
The KilaMuLa Project is tightly aligned with Rwanda’s Green Growth and Climate Resilience Strategy and the Vision 2050 roadmap, which prioritize sustainable land management and climate adaptation. The program seeks to demonstrate how conservation and commerce can coexist to drive inclusive, long-term prosperity.
Under Mr. Mwangangi’s leadership, the project will scale up climate-smart agricultural practices, enhance local market access, and develop financing models that ensure the sustainability of environmental gains beyond the project’s initial funding cycle.
A Regional Model for Sustainable Development
With its $50 million budget, the KilaMuLa Project is one of the largest investments in integrated landscape management in the Great Lakes region. The outcomes are expected to inform future national and regional climate resilience frameworks, shaping how countries integrate environmental restoration, food systems, and community empowerment into a unified sustainability agenda.
Stakeholders across Rwanda’s environmental and agricultural sectors have praised the appointment, describing it as a timely and strategic move that reinforces the country’s commitment to climate adaptation and resilient food systems.
