URA customs officials in Jinja have confiscated a consignment of 500 bags of cement that were being smuggled in two trucks.
The officials got intelligence that a notorious cement smuggler had two trucks carrying contraband cement on the way to the heart of Uganda.
“The drivers had dodged official customs checkpoints, opting for the route through the Isimba Bridge. Immediately, the Jinja Enforcement team set their wheels in motion to hunt for the trucks laying a tactical ambush in one of the villages in Kamuli District,” the tax body said in a statement.
The two Fuso trucks had wanted to use the opportunity of a heavy downpour to evade the officials byt their luck ran out after they were nabbed.
“The trucks were escorted to the Jinja Enforcement tactical base where offence management ensued immediately. Verification revealed 250 bags of Simba cement from the Fuso UBL 284 Y and 250 bags of Simba cement aboard the other Fuso UBN 498 G,” the statement read.
URA urged Ugandans to desist from smuggling because of its financially injurious ramifications that include among others losing the vehicles used in smuggling to the state and weighty penalties.
