Samuel Mwogeza

As Chief Finance Officer, of Uganda’s largest Bank who has also been part of the mighty Stanbic story, Sam Mwogeza has enough grip on running the numbers game and is certainly fit to lead most if not all banks in Uganda. This Makerere University and Edinburgh Business School trained banker has been at the banking game for about 20 years with some of Uganda’s best banks.

Between June 2003 and September 2007 he worked at Citibank Uganda as the Head of Business Services and Operations and then moved to Barclays Bank Uganda (now Absa) in April 2008 as Head, Commercial MI & Analytics till April 2010.  In May 2010 he crossed over to Stanbic Bank Uganda as the Finance Manager, Corporate & Investment Banking and after 2 years, he moved again to become a Financial Controller for nearly four years.

In November 2015, he was appointed the Chief Finance Officer for Stanbic.

Since his appointment to the CFO role, he has been part of the Patrick Mweheire team that has nearly doubled the bank’s assets, from UGX3.7 trillion in 2015 to UGX6.6 trillion at the end of 2019.

Sam Mwogeza won the 2018 CFO of the Year Award, organised by ACCA Uganda and Deloitte. In September 2019, he was also declared the CPA of the Year at the 2019 Accountancy Service Awards (ASA) by the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU). He is also the technical lead on the Uganda Bankers Association (UBA) CFO Executive Committee.

He is an ACCA fellow too and was one of the three front runners for the Stanbic Uganda CEO job, that eventually went to Anne Juuko.

Until May 2020, Sam Ntulume was the Managing Director of NC Bank Uganda Limited. But following the October 2019 merger of NC Group and CBA Group in Kenya and subsequently the merger of their Ugandan in Units this May 2020, Sam was made Executive Director of the larger NCBA Bank Uganda Limited.

Given Sam’s rich CV and performance record, his being scooped up for another CEO role soon is matter of fact a question of when and not if. 

In the slightly over three years he led NC Bank, customer deposits nearly doubled from UGX98.7 billion in 2016 to UGX189.7 billion at the end of 2019. With growing deposits lending has also blossomed by 42% from UGX98.7 billion to UGX140 billion, partly driving a 42.6% growth in assets, from UGX203.4 billion to UGX290 billion in the same period.

Before NC Bank, Ntulume was the Financial Controller at Stanbic Bank Uganda for 4 years and Head of Finance at CFC Stanbic Bank Kenya amongst senior roles in the banking industry.

He holds an MBA from ESAMI and is an ACCA Fellow

William Sekabembe

Fresh from completing his MBA from the famous IMD Business School in Switzerland, on June 12, 2020, Sekabembe adds yet another qualification on his rich profile.

He is the Executive Director and Chief of Business at dfcu Bank, a role he assumed on August 2016. dfcu Bank is Uganda’s fifth largest bank with assets of UGX1.87 trillion and an after tax profit of UGX74.8trillion in 2019.

With over 20 years’ experience from some of the country’s largest banks, prior to his appointment as Executive Director, he was the Head of Development and Institutional Banking. Some of the other responsibilities he has had, include: Head of products (Stanbic Bank Uganda) and Head of Distribution (Barclays Bank Uganda). He has also had exposure to different markets including; United Arab Emirates, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Kenya. 

It is said in that in September 2018, he turned down a CEO role at KCB Bank Uganda to “concentrate on being part of the strategic growth of dfcu,” according to insiders at the bank.

Bernard Magulu

Bernard Robinson Magulu

Bernard Magulu is a skilled banker, with over 20 years’ knowledge in banking. He has worked at Bank of Uganda, Centenary Bank and United Bank for Africa (UBA) where he worked as Chief Finance Officer and Strategist and was part of the team that ushered the West African bank – UBA – into the Ugandan market.

He later joined Orient Bank as Executive Director before moving to Bank of Africa where he still currently serves as Executive Director. At Bank of Africa, he has played a critical role in the growth of the bank from an UGX688.6 billion asset bank in 2016 to UGX803.1 billion at the end of 2019, with UGX20.2 billion in net profit.

His specific competencies lie in Finance, Credit Management, Risk and Forensic Management, Corporate Transformation, Liquidation Management and Strategy Execution.

He is also the Vice Chairman of the UK – Ugandan Convention, an Investment Forum as well as an accredited member of the European Economic Community (EEC) Business Forum, and Commonwealth Business Council (CBC).He is a Fellow of the Association of Certified Chartered Accountants of England, (FCCA) and a member of the Institute of Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU).

He earned a First Class/Distinction Masters of Management and International Business degree from the Southampton Business School, United Kingdom, specializing in International Finance and Corporate Strategy.

Michael Segwaya

For the last 15 years, Segwaya has been in the top management of Absa Bank Uganda (former Barclays Bank Uganda). He joined Absa in 2005 as the Head of Financial Reporting, and after less than year, he was appointed as the Financial Controller. He held this position for six years until his appointment as Chief Finance Officer and Executive Director in 2012. 

In the two roles, he is responsible for overseeing the strategic direction and financial performance of the bank. As such, he has been part of the team that has restored Absa to its former third position with assets of UGX3.42 trillion in 2019 and UGX78 billion in profit. .

Overall, he has 20 years of banking experience rotating around strategy formulation, management, financial risk management, corporate finance, and planning. He is well-read too. He is a Certified Chartered Accountant (FCCA) and holds a B.A Commerce (Accounting & Finance) degree from Makerere University as well as an MBA from Oxford Brookes University in the UK.

Anthony Kituuka

Anthony Kituuka

Anthony Kituuka is the Executive Director and No.2 at Equity Bank Uganda Limited, Uganda’s fastest growing and the 8th largest Bank in Uganda with assets of UGX1.62 trillion as at the end of 2019.

As the bank’s No.2, Kituuka has been a key player in Equity Bank’s steroidal growth that has seen the bank emerge from the 12th position in 2016 to the 8th position, growing its assets by 153% from just UGX642.8 billion to UGX1.63 trillion at the end of 2019.

He has served as Equity Bank’s Executive Director, since June 2016, but before that, he worked as the Executive Director in Charge of Regional Subsidiaries based at Equity Bank’s regional headquarters in Nairobi between October 2014 and June 2016.

Before Equity Bank, Kituuka worked with Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) in Nairobi as the head of Global Corporates (9 months), KCB Bank Uganda (5 years and 5 months) and Barclays Bank Uganda (1year and 9 months). Prior to joining the banking sector, he worked with Hima Cement as the Customer Service Manager.

In 2011, Kituuka left for the UK to pursue his MBA in Oil and Gas from Middlesex University which he completed it in 2013. He also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Statistics &Applied Economics from Makerere University, Uganda. He is also an FCCA and an alumnus of the Strathmore, Lagos and IESE (Spain) Business Schools.

Emma Mugisha

Emma Mugisha

Most of Uganda’s largest and profitable banks in Uganda, have a 60/40 split between retail and corporate banking and Emma Mugisha fits in both worlds having had experience on both ends of the coin.

She currently heads the Corporate and Investment Banking (CIB) arm of Stanbic Uganda where in 2019, she presided over a portfolio worth UGX354 billion in revenue; UGX1.2 trillion in lending; UGX2.2 trillion in customer deposits and UGX147 billion in net profit.

Before CIB, Emma was the Head, Transactional Products and Services, a position she held for six years from 2014. Prior to joining Stanbic, she worked for Absa (former Barclays) as the Head of Business Banking for seven years. She’d also worked for Absa both in Uganda and Kenya since 2001. She picked up significant experience in micro-finance and treasury management from Opportunity Bank.

She holds Master of Business Administration RSM Erasmus Universiteit and MBA from Makerere University. She also serves on the board of Financial Sector Deepening Uganda (FSDU).

Godfrey Byekwaso

Godfrey Byekwaso

Godfrey Byekwaso is a highly skilled accountant and banker with key competencies in financial analysis and management. He currently serves as General Manager Finance at Centenary Bank, Uganda’s 2nd biggest commercial bank with total assets UGX3.56 trillion as of 2019.

He has been part of the Centenary Bank success story for the last seven years, having joined the bank in 2012, from FINCA where he started honing his finance and banking career as Finance and Administration Manager from 2004. In 2009, he was employed as Senior Regional Finance Manager for FINCA International until his appointment as General Manager Finance at Centenary Bank.

Before FINCA, he also worked at USAID as the Supervisory Financial Analyst.  .

Byekwaso graduated with a degree Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting from Makerere University in 1995. He also holds an MBA (Accounting and Finance) from Makerere University. In 2014, he enrolled for the CEO Apprenticeship program at Strathmore Business School, Nairobi, Kenya. He is a Fellow of Chartered Certified Accountants (FCCA) and also a member of Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU).

Byekwaso was awarded the Finance Transformation Award at Chief Financial Officer Awards 2018 hosted by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants Uganda (ACCA) and Deloitte.

He is also the brains behind the CFO Forum at the Uganda Bankers Association that brings together banking CFOS to discuss ideas and solutions to the common challenges affecting the industry.

Joseph Balikuddembe

Joseph Balikuddembe

Joseph Balikuddembe is an all-round banker with core expertise in Retail/Commercial, Corporate and Institutional Banking.

Before his current Executive Director role at United Bank for Africa (UBA) Uganda, a role he assumed in 2016, Joseph worked at Barclays Bank Uganda (now Absa) for nearly three years as Head Business Banking (2014-2016) and 2016. Prior to that, he had served as Head Trade Finance at Barclays Corporate Banking between 2012 and 2014.

In the four years he has been at UBA he had been part of the team that have growth its assets by an above-industry Compounded Annual Growth rate of 27%, from UGX172.9 billion in 2016 to UGX449.3 billion at the end of 2019. As a result, the bank has been able to end years of losses, turning the corner into profitability for the fourth consecutive year. After tax profit at the bank rose by 63% to UGX8 billion in 2019.

He holds an MBA from Edinburgh Business School of Heriot-Watt University and a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Agricultural Economics from Makerere University.

Peace Kabunga

Peace Kabunga is a proficient banker, with specialist experience in mortgaging.

She started her banking career as a relationship manager at Dfcu Leasing for 6 years (August 2001-June 2007). She then moved on to Standard Chartered Bank as the Sales Manager in charge of Mortgages, between July 2007 and August 2008. In September 2008, she was picked by Barclays Bank (now Absa Bank Uganda) as their Head Mortgages for their Barclays at Work segment and after 5 years, she joined Stanbic Bank as the Head of Workplace Banking (May 2013- July 2017).

In July 2017, she moved to Housing Finance Bank as their Head of Mortgaging and Development Finance; a role that involved driving business growth, leading customer relationship management, and managing credit risk. 

It is from here that, in November 2018, she became the Executive Director.

Kabunga is one of the key drivers of Housing Finance Bank’s stellar growth that in 2019 alone, saw Housing Finance grow its assets by 17.5 per cent from UGX776.9 billion to UGX912.5 billion. This was on account of a 24 per cent growth in deposits, from UGX451.3 billion to UGX559.8 billion and an 8.2 per cent growth in lending from UGX511.6 billion in 2018 to UGX553.5 billion in 2019.

Mark Anthony Muyobo

Mark Anthony Muyobo

After a solid twelve years working for then Barclays Bank Uganda (now Absa Bank Uganda Limited) and rising through the ranks, Mark Muyobo joined NC Bank in 2018 as an Executive Director.

By the time he left Absa he had risen to become the Vice President, Global Corporates, earning himself rich experience in crafting financing and banking solutions for global corporates as well as large and medium enterprises.

With the merger of NC Bank and CBA, Muyobo will be one of two Executive Directors in the new and larger NCBA Bank Uganda.

An FCCA fellow with over 13 years’ experience, before joining Absa, he worked with dfcu Bank and auditing majors, KPMG.

Mr Muyobo holds a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Heriot Watt University in the United Kingdom and a Bachelor’s Degree of Business Administration from Ndejje University as well as an Advanced Diploma in Credit Skills Development, Banking Corporate, Finance, and Securities Law from the ifs School of Finance in the United Kingdom.

Robert Jjagwe

Robert Jjagwe is the Executive Director and Head of Treasury and Trade Solutions at Citibank Uganda- Uganda’s 9th largest bank and part of the global banking behemoth, Citi Group.

Jjagwe has been working with Citi since 1999, rising to become the Operations and Technology Head in 2007. In 2011 he did a short stint at Citi N.A in Kuwait as the Senior Country Operations Officer and returned in 2013 to take up the Head, Treasury & Trade Solutions business for Citibank Uganda.

In 2017, he assumed the twin role of Executive Director and Head of Treasury and Trade Solutions.

As the Head of Treasury and Trade Services, he is the bank’s go-to person for trade finance, and working capital finance and cash management products. In addition he also represents Citi on the American Chamber of Commerce Board.

Robert holds a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce and is a member of the Association of Chartered Accountants, UK.

Yustus Aribariho

Yustus Aribariho

Aribaruho is a “diversely experienced, well-travelled and performance oriented Banking Executive with exposure in Africa, Asia and the Middle East.”

He has spent 18 years at Standard Chartered Bank allowing himself to get grounded in especially Consumer Banking business particularly, lending products – credit cards, personal loans, mortgages and auto loans as well as customer deposit mobilisation and management. He is also equally experienced in areas of governance, operational risk management as well as business process transformation.

Between April 2005 and July 2007, he was the Head of Marketing at Standard Chartered Bank Uganda and then rose to Head of Lending between July 2007 and December 2008. He then became Head of Lending and Consumer Transaction Banking at Standard Chartered, Qatar. By January 2010, he had become the Business Planning Manager for Group Retail Products. In September 2011 be became the Senior Manager, Process Transformation, Group Retail Banking Products. In January 2016, he was appointed the Regional Head, Digital Banking Africa and Middle East, based in Dubai, in this role he is in charge of driving and executing Standard Chartered Bank’s digitall banking Agenda in Africa and the Middle East.

Yustus is an MBA Graduate of Anglia Ruskin University, Chemsford UK.

Grace Muliisa

Grace Muliisa has been in banking, almost if not all her working life. She joined Standard Chartered Bank in 2001 as a Customer Service Agent and 10 years later, she had risen to become the Head of Consumer Banking. 

In 2017, she left Standard Chartered Bank to join Stanbic Bank where she has since risen to become the Head Personal & Business Banking.

With incomes of UGX449 billion; lending worth UGX1.68 trillion, UGX2.5 trillion in customer deposits and profit after tax of UGX106 billion in 2019, the Personal and Business Banking portfolio that Grace runs is bigger than many commercial banks in Uganda making her a good candidate for a banking CEO job.

She is an exceptional, highly driven leader with extensive experience in retail banking, operational risk and business strategy.

Annette Kihuguru

Annette Kihuguru

Annette Kihuguru is currently, the Executive Director at Ecobank Uganda. She joined the bank in May 2016.

She holds close to 30 years of banking experience, gained from the then Uganda Commercial Bank and subsequently Stanbic Bank Uganda; Barclays Bank Uganda (now Absa Bank) from where she joined Ecobank Uganda as the Executive Director and Head Commercial Banking.

Kihuguru holds Master’s degree in Management from The Uganda Management and Bachelor’s Degree in Arts (Economics and Political Science from Makerere University.

Outside banking, she is the chairperson at Sprout Capital Investments Limited one of the largest private investment clubs in Uganda.
