When it comes to collecting tax, Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) is known for crossing all t’s and dotting all the i’s. They are no nonsense.
But as usual the taxpayer, every once in a while gets his way around.
And this is how it went down, yesterday, 4th October 2019, at the premier URA Tax Derby at Legends Rugby Grounds.
The URA Tax Derby, is part of URA’s many activities to celebrate taxpayers for their unending commitment to meet their tax obligations. All proceeds, from the game- for every goal scored, are going towards buying a boat for Bwama Primary School, in Lake Bunyonyi, to ease transport for children from the mainland to school.

Despite the fact that every goal scored had a price tag, neither of the two sides, wanted to concede a goal. Following a goalless match between the URA team on one side and the taxpayers on the other, it was time for a penalty shootout, and the taxpayer got their way- a 1:0 win against the taxman.
The winning goal was scored by Mark Ssali, the Corporate Communications Head at Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA).
Dr. Begumisa Protazio, the URA Commissioner Internal Audit & Compliance, who had substituted URA Commissioner General Nnalongo Doris Akol as goal keeper- simply failed to be compliant, giving the win to the taxpayers.

The URA team, was captained by none other than Nnalongo Akol herself while the taxpayers team, was led by billionaire businessman and one of the top taxpayers, Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia.
But when all is said and done, the ultimate winners were the children of Bwama Primary School.
