Following government’s easing of some movement restrictions over Covid-19, Speke Group of Hotels, Uganda’s largest chain of hotels, has moved to open some of its flagship hotels to the public.

The Group runs a mix of luxury, business and budget hotels as well as apartment hotels.

However the opening is being done in strict adherence to social distancing guidelines.

“Kabira Country Club, Speke Apartments, Bukoto Heights, Boulevard Apartments, Speke Apartments Kitante, and Speke Resort Munyonyo are now open and operating,” Group Chairman Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia said in a media interview early this week.

The award-winning La Cabana Restaurant at Speke Apartments on Wampewo Avenue, famous for Brazilian style grills is also now open, but shall operate at half capacity so as to create enough space necessary for observing social distancing guidelines. 

“Speke Hotel (in the Kampala Central business district), Forest Cottages (Bukoto), and Dolphin Suites (Bugolobi) will open soon,” Dr. Sudhir added.

Speke Group’s facilities like restaurants and conference rooms have all been reconfigured to comply with the recommended social distancing guidelines. In addition, patrons will be required to observe, at all times the recommended preventative measures such as frequent washing and sanitizing of hands, taking temperature checks, wearing of masks. Premises will also be disinfected regularly.

Government, beginning May 26th allowed private cars to start moving and public transport is expected to resume on June 4th 2020.

‘Scientific’ meetings and weddings

“We have utilised this time to implement detailed measures to prepare ourselves to welcome you back whenever you feel safe and confident to travel and meet,” Amit Sachdeva, the Speke Group of Hotels General Manager told CEO East Africa Magazine.

In a light-at-the-end-of-the-tunnel move for the tourism and hospitality industry, Speke Group, Uganda’s largest hotels chain has opened its doors to guests under a tight health and safety regime.
