Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has tasked the Uganda Airlines’ newly appointed Chief Executive Officer Jenifer Bamuturaki to create a strategic plan that will revamp the national carrier into a lucrative airline.
During their meeting at the Speaker’s chambers on Tuesday, Among, who was in company of her deputy Speaker, Thomas Tayebwa, said Uganda Airlines is funded by taxpayers therefore the airline’s management should create value for money.
‘’The airline was revived using tax payers’money. We expect you to come up with a strategic plan that will meet the vision of making national carrier a world-class airline that will compete favorably and profitably with other airlines,’’ she said.
The Works and Transport minister Gen Katumba Wamala last week confirmed Bamuturaki as the fully appointed CEO of Uganda Airlines.
Earlier on PricewaterhouseCoopers a consultancy firm was hired by the works ministry to execute the recruitment process to fill the top position had advertised in the media seeking qualified candidates.
Uganda Airlines has since it’s inauguration in 2019, been tainted by negative publicity arising from various administrative flaws that range from bad procurement deals, in-flight issues, questionable staff recruitments and several other flight and administrative challenges.
The Auditor General John Muwanga named Uganda Airlines among the worst performing state enterprises whose performance was setback by the Covid-19 pandemic for two years.
The audit detailed that the company earned $113million (Ugx 421 billion) but spent $165million (Ugx615 billion).
The government-owned aviation company has so far had three Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) plus two separate executive boards within a brief period of less than four years that the airline has been in operation.
