Francis Kamulegeya (left) who has served PwC in Uganda for 27 years, will be replaced by Uthman Mayanja, another PwC Uganda major that has been at the firm for 19 years.

After an impactful 27 years at PricewaterhouseCoopers Uganda, Francis Kamulegeya has announced that he is taking early retirement out of the accountancy firm come June 2022.

He also announced that Uthman Mayanja has been appointed as the new Country Senior Partner of PwC Uganda with effect from 1 January 2022.  

“After 27 years of working with PwC. 17 of which as a Partner based in Uganda. I will be taking early retirement from the firm at the end of June 2022. It has been an honour and privilege to be of service to you, our clients, and friends, and to witness the developments in the profession and our firm during this period,” Kamulegeya announced on his LinkedIn page on 16th December.

“I have been fortunate to contribute to the firm in various leadership roles over the years. I have served the firm as the PwC Uganda Country Senior Partner for the last 12 years, a member of the PwC Africa – East Market Area leadership team for 12 years as well as served as a member of the PwC Africa Governance Board for the last 8 years,” Kamulegeya further said.

He however said that he will be working very closely with Uthman and the other Partners in the firm to ensure a smooth leadership transition and the continuation of high value, quality services up to June 2022.

Who is Uthman Mayanja?

Mayanja has been a leader of the Assurance line of service as well as a member of the Africa regional Assurance leadership team. He is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales (ICAEW) and a member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU).

Mayanja, who has been with PwC for 19 years, cut his teeth in the accounting business with the London Entrepreneurial Services division of Ernst & Young, serving telecommunications, aerospace defence and e-commerce clients across London and the Southeast United Kingdom.

He returned to Uganda in September 2002 to join PwC Uganda as an Assistant Manager.

He became Manager in July 2003 and by July 2005 had risen to become a Senior Manager and Associate Director in July 2008. He in July 2009 got promoted to Partner and has been in that role since then.

He brings to the role extensive experience gained from working with clients in a wide variety of sectors, including multinational corporations and public sector organisations. in East Africa and the United Kingdom.

Mayanja will be responsible for delivering PwC’s new network strategy- The New Equation, which focuses on two interconnected needs that most organisations face in the coming years i.e. building trust across a wide range of areas that are important to stakeholders and delivering sustained outcomes in an environment where the risk of disruption is more intense than ever before.

On learning of Kamulegeya’s exit, various leaders continue to share their admiration of the tax giant, each taking turns to extol him for his great leadership across corporate Uganda.

Cephas K. Birungyi, the Team Leader/Partner/Advocate – Legal and Tax Consultant at Birungyi, Barata & Associates praised Kamulegeya as a bold and roaringly successful leader.

“Yours was a roaring success. Your footprint will last a long time. For long you will remain the precedent. Ride boldly into the sunset,” he wrote on his LinkedIn page.

Gertrude Karugaba, Partner and Head: Corporate/Mergers & Acquisitions at Sebalu and Lule Advocates called him a phenomenal leader of our generation while William Sekabembe, Executive Director at dfcu Bank, called him “exemplary in every respect!”

Samuel Fredrick Mwogeza, Head Consumer and High Net-Worth Stanbic Bank Uganda, said Kamulegeya had left an “indelible mark that we’ve all felt.” 

Gimara Francis, the Head of ALP East Africa said of Kamulegeya: “Powerful. You have been an outstanding captain and we celebrate you.”

Alvin Mbugua, the former Managing Director of Uganda Breweries Limited and currently the Managing Director – Diageo Caribbean and Central America said that Francis has been “a role model, a great mentor for many and an outstanding captain of industry.”

“Fearless in always speaking for what is win-win for industry and government. I know this is not Goodbye but an evolution of how you want to keep impacting Sub-Saharan Africa,” Mbugua reiterated. 

Mathias Katamba, the Chief Executive Officer, dfcu Bank said Kamulegeya was “a true example of the very best” while Julius Kakeeto, Managing Director at Post Bank Uganda Ltd said that Kamulegeya had “left a mark in the industry as the go-to on all matters to do with tax.”

Doris Akol, a Tax and Legal Advisor and Partner at Kyagaba & Otatiina Advocates/Dentons Uganda and former Commissioner-General at Uganda Revenue Authority said that Francis was an “excellent leader” with an “iconic presence in the profession.”
