The CEO Summit Uganda, together with the SDG Secretariat at the Office of the Prime Minister in Uganda will this Wednesday 7th December 2022 host the 13th Edition of the Annual CEO Forum at the Méstil Hotel & Residences Kampala, starting at 08 am.

The 2022 CEO Forum is being held under the theme: “Beyond Sustainability – Strategic Choices that Matter”. This is the first time the CEO Forum is being held physically since 2019. The 2020 and 2021 editions were held virtually.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a series of 17 goals adopted by the United Nations that all member countries must urgently put into practice to bring about peace and prosperity for banking by 2030. At the heart of the SDGs is the ending of poverty and other deprivations as well as strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – while tackling climate change and working to preserve our water bodies and forests. Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG), on the other hand, is a new sustainability paradigm that looks at how organisations are held accountable for establishing and maintaining sustainable practices that mitigate their impact on the environment as well as integrate social goals into their business models.

The forum is co-sponsored by Jubilee Allianz General Insurance, TotalEnergies, Stanbic Bank, NCBA Bank, the Office of the Prime Minister and Smart24 TV.

When the over 150 leaders from the country’s leading private sector firms, civil society and government gather, on the agenda will be how businesses and particularly business leaders can be at the forefront of innovatively investing in ESG as a means to accelerating the achievement of SDG targets.

“The 2022 Forum seeks to drive a phenomenal shift towards purpose beyond profit to pave way for the shared value journey within the context of business sustainability,” says Stephen Mukasa, the Managing Director of CEO Summit Uganda and the Forum organiser.

“The Keynote topic “Beyond Sustainability – Strategic Choices that Matter” will be delivered by Ms. Dudu Msomi, the Chief Executive Officer of Busara Leadership Partners (South Africa) who will share the most valuable ideas, experiences and recommended actions to accelerate collaborative innovation in this changing world,” added Mr. Mukasa.

Mukasa said that the choice of the theme is informed by the fact that most developing countries such as Uganda that were already falling behind on some of their SDG targets were further impeded by the Covid-19 pandemic, making the need for an inclusive post-pandemic public, private sector and civil society engagement very necessary.

Also speaking at the Forum will be Rt. Hon. Justine Lumumba Kasule, the Minister of General Duties, Office of the Prime Minister.

Susan Ngongi Namondo, the UN Resident Coordinator in Uganda will address the Forum on how businesses can upscale their sustainability standards as an instrument to achieve SDGs in Uganda.

The Annual CEO Forum was first held in 2009, as the country was emerging from the financial meltdown of 2008 and has since remained the platform for the captains of industry to debate and rethink the economy, drive mutually beneficial partnerships to address each other’s woes and become catalysts for action and change.

Over the years, the Annual CEO Forum has evolved into a diverse and exclusive forum that brings together the region’s best business and industry minds, thought leaders, public sector practitioners and development actors to engender insights that influence and implement solutions to business and industry challenges and hindrances to economic growth.

“The expected outcome of the 2022 Forum will be among others, securing the commitment and involvement of Uganda’s public, private and civil society leadership on driving the SDGs agenda as well as engaging and influencing their respective stakeholder ecosystems towards this goal. The cherry on the cake will be the launch of the Sustainability Centre at the CEO Summit Uganda – which will spearhead and track the progress of ESG and the Sustainability Agenda in Uganda,” noted Mr. Mukasa.

While previous Fora have been exclusive, invite-only events, at this year’s event there will be a limited number of tables open to the public at a fee of UGX 3.5 million for a table of seven (7) people.
