Dr Emmanuel Mugisha has been Country Director for Uganda

Dr. Emannuel Mugisha, has been promoted to a worldwide leadership role of Global Director at PATH with effect from July 2021.

He now leads a global project as Director, TyVac Project and Senior Technical Advisor for immunizations, with implementation activities in the African and Asian regions. In his new role he leads PATH’s global work on typhoid vaccine introduction and uptake, which PATH manages as a member of the Typhoid Vaccine Acceleration Consortium (TyVAC) member.

Dr. Mugisha has been PATH’s Country Director in Uganda, providing linkages at the national, regional, district, and local levels for PATH’s work on HIV/AIDS, family planning, reproductive health, vaccines, and maternal, newborn, and child health and nutrition.

Dr. Mugisha is a public health specialist with over 25 years of experience in research, public health program implementation, project management, and monitoring and evaluation, particularly related to HIV/AIDS, reproductive health, vaccines, and systems strengthening. He has led the planning, budgeting, staffing, implementation, and evaluation of many projects, including serving as project leader for the human papillomavirus vaccine demonstration. 


He has been involved in starting large projects funded by the US Agency for International Development (USAID), including the Advocacy for Better Health project, where he now provides general oversight. He regularly collaborates with Uganda’s ministries of health, education, and gender as well as the World Health Organization, USAID, and regional and local partners.

TyVAC, the glabl project that Dr Mugisha is now leading, employs a multidisciplinary approach, working with global and local partners to accelerate the introduction of Typhoid Conjugate Vaccine (TCVs) in low-income countries and facilitate access to typhoid vaccines as part of an integrated prevention plan that also includes improved water, sanitation, and hygiene.

Before joining PATH in 2006, Dr. Mugisha served in various organizations in different capacities, such as study coordinator for the first African HIV vaccine trial with the Joint Clinical Research Center (funded by the US National Institute of Health). Subsequently, he served as the senior national program officer for the second HIV vaccine trial funded by the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI).

Dr. Mugisha holds an Masters in Public Health (MPH) from The Johns Hopkins University and a PhD in health systems from the University of South Africa/Universiteit van Suid-Afrika.
