The Royal Ascot Goat Races will be happening this Saturday October 12, 2019 at Speke Resort Munyonyo.
We know you have been waiting for this all year, long, so let us give you some quick reminders to help you enjoy this day smoothly.
- The Royal Ascot Goat Race is one of Uganda’s longest running events- started in 1993 and despite a few breaks, it remains Kampala’s most attended event.
- Tickets to arguably the glamorous social event are on sale at Speke Resort Munyonyo, Kabira Country Club and Speke Apartments at UGX50,000 with early bird offers at Shs30, 000. VIP, which entitles you access to the owners’ hospitality tent costs Shs350, 000 for early Bird and Shs400, 000 at the gate.
- But more than just fun and business networking, it is fun for a good cause as proceeds from the event go towards good causes and charity. Previous beneficiaries have included the Katalemwa Cheshire Home who specialise in providing assistance to the physically disabled including provision of medical, orthopaedic and surgical facilities, education and training as well as Nsambya Babies Home. This year’s proceeds go to improving sanitation at Good Samaritan High School in Kamwokya.
- There will be eight races over the course of the day, each race featuring eight goats. Any person can sponsor a race for anything between Shs6m and Shs10m, or buy a goat to participate in a race for between Shs500, 000 and Shs1m.
- There some amazing accommodation offers for those who would like to spend a night at the Speke Resort Hotel after the event. If you want to leave like a president, the Presidential cottage (accommodates up to four people, has been reduced by 27% from USD600 to USD445) while the Presidential Suite (also accommodates up to four people) has been reduced by 26%, from USD780 to USD573 per night and on a bed and breakfast basis. Both presidential offers come with two adult VIP and two children VIP tickets to the goat races. Superior Rooms have been reduced by 20%- you pay USD201 instead of USD250 while Executive Rooms have also been discounted by 20%, so you get to pay USD201 as well. These two offers come with two complementary tickets to the races.
- This year’s event is sponsored by Robbialac Paints, NTV Uganda, Sanyu FM, Goldstar Insurance, Speke Resort and Tusker Malt Lager.
Some basic etiquette and other tips
- Dress to Impress: Whether we like it or not, how we look and how we dress affects how we are perceived by others. It is so important to project the right image through your fashion that’s why at such an event you should make an impressive fashion statement. Don’t be a boring reveller.
- Know what tent your ticket gives you access to: There are lots of corporate tents, some are open, some are exclusive. Some tents have foods and drinks flowing all the time, some are limited, so book your ticket deliberately. And carry some spare money just in case.
- Everyone is a winner: you could have sponsored a goat or two, but ultimately everyone will be out to have fun, have a hearty laugh- all for a good cause. Don’t fuss about knowing rules governing winning or losing goats. The truth is all participants are having fun. We cheer all goats. So, cheer on at the right time.
- Keep your business cards close: Historically the goat races have always been a playground for Kampala’s who is who- including expatriates and celebrities. You never know who you will meet and need to meet again.
- Let people at home, friends know you’re at the goat races: Yes, this is the only real party in Kampala this weekend. So you shouldn’t make your people worry where you could be in case you come back late or spend a night at Speke Resort or in the neighbourhood. Just be transparent and tell your people not to worry about where you are.
See you there!
Let’s goat it on!
