Mulago neurosurgeon, Dr. Muhumuza recognised by Rotary Club of Bukoto for outstanding service to humanity

The Rotary Club of Bukoto this week recognized Dr. Michael Edgar Muhumuza,  a Senior Consultant in Neurology and Neurosurgery and currently the Head of Neurosurgery at the Mulago National Referral Hospital with its Vocational Award for 2019/2020.

The Vocational Award is a non-cash award that is given to high performing individuals that contribute to societal transformation.

According to Mercy Kyomugasho Kainobwisho, the President-elect, Rotary Club of Bukoto, Dr. Muhumuza was recognized because of “his humility, integrity, professionalism, mentorship of young people to become neurosurgeons, and dedication to his service.”

The Uganda Medical Association (UMA), president ‎Dr Ekwaro Obuku was recently quoted in The New Vision, Uganda’s leading daily saying that Uganda has only 7 active neurosurgeons.

He was awarded by Dr. Ken Mugisha the Past Rotary District 9211 Governor in the presence of club members. Rotary D9211 consists of 140 clubs from Tanzania and Uganda with a membership of over 4,000.

Writing on her LinkedIn newsfeed, Ms. Kainobwisho said: “the amiable doctor has done extensive work in communities and many have given testimonies on how he saved their lives and those of their relatives. With skills in community mobilization, he organised neurosurgery camps and has written a number of publications on the development of neurosurgery in conjunction with the Ministry of Health. Some of his academic works have been published in the Chinese Journal of Neurosurgery owing to his expertise in the Chinese language.”

Muhumuza holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from Guangxi Medical University in China, and a Masters of Medicine in Neurosurgery from Tianjin Medical Universe. He has also attended several trainings including a diploma in Chinese Language. He is a member of the College of East Central and South African Surgeons and has been very instrumental in the growth of neurosurgery as a profession by training a number of Neurosurgeons that are now practicing in and outside Uganda.

“He has intentionally ensured that Uganda has more specialists in Neurosurgery through singlehandedly enrolling and facilitating the training of several doctors,” observed Ms. Kainobwisho.

“His humility, integrity, professionalism, mentorship of young people to become Neurosurgeons, dedication to his service enticed Rotary to recognise him for a Vocational Award of 2019/2020,” observed Kainobwisho.

According to their website, the Rotary Club of Bukoto was chartered on 21st March 2003 with the late Rtn. Peter Elimu as its first charter president. Gloria Atwine is its current president for 2019/2020 and is deputised by PP Tony Bandebye.
