Telecom giants MTN has fulfilled a Shs1 billion pledge it made, last year, toward the support of Uganda government’s effort to cope with increasing refugee influx in the country.
The pledge was delivered by Rob Shuter, the president and chief executive of MNT Group, who is in the country for the MTN Global Leadership Gathering.
In June, last year, President Museveni and UN chief Antonio Guterres hosted a global Solidarity Summit on Refugees in Entebbe to support the Uganda government efforts to deal with the influx of refugees.
The two-day summit convened world leaders to stand in solidarity with the country as it hosts over a million refugees, with nearly 950,000 of them from the restive neighbouring South Sudan.

At the summit, several governments and agencies committed to the support in cash and pledges, but it was MTN Uganda that caught the attention of the delegates by leading the private sector with a $1 million pledge.
Shuter, while meeting Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda in Kampala on Tuesday, reiterated MTN’s commitment to ensuring that the Shs1 billion creates meaningful impact and reduces the government’s burden to support in excess of a million refugees in the country.
