Just like everything else, Uganda Law Society general elections have been affected by the Coronavirus pandemic with the current term of office having ended in April, 2020. The Uganda Law Society is Uganda’s Bar Association established under the Uganda Law Society Act cap 276, laws of Uganda.

The elections which were slated for April 2020 were postponed. The Bar Association has since, through a notice signed by Francis Harimwomugasho on 8th July, 2020, called for a virtual annual general meeting on Friday, 7th August, 2020.

The candidates who have since submitted their nomination papers for the presidency include; Phiona Wall Nabaasa, Rashid Ssemambo, Anne Karungi, Anthony Wameli, Nelson Walusimbi and Bernard Oundo. We bring you brief profiles on each of them;

 

Phiona Wall Nabaasa

Phiona Wall is a corporate and commercial lawyer extensively experienced in legal risk management, regulatory compliance, board affairs and stake holder management. She holds a Bachelor of laws from Makerere University, Post Graduate Diploma in legal practice, and Master’s in Business Administration. She has also received specialized training in Banking and Securities law from the International Law Institute and training in arbitration from the Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators.

She is the current Vice President of the Uganda Law Society and Chairperson of the Legal Aid and Pro Bono Project of the Uganda Law Society.

Phiona currently serves as the senior Manager Legal services of National Water and Sewerage Corporation a position she has held since June, 2014.

Throughout her service on the National Bar association executive, Phiona has been passionate about mentoring young people, she is the patron of Kampala International University Law Society, she was recently awarded the Hague Institute for Innovation in Law “2018 Talent to watch” award.

 

Rashid Ssemambo

Rashid Ssemambo is the Founding and Managing Partner at Ssemambo & Ssemambo Advocates with over 15 years’ experience in legal practice. He holds a Bachelor of Laws from Makerere University, a post Graduate Diploma in Legal practice and a Master from Laws from Makerere University. Rashid is also a Lecturer at the law Development Centre – Uganda’s Bar Course training school.

Rashid has over time developed a niche in corporate and commercial practice, banking and Finance, Financial management, International transactions, logistical management and legal consultancy. He has successfully represented high profile persons and companies in courts of laws.

 

Anthony Wameli

Anthony Wameli is the Founding partner at Wameli & Co. Advocates with over 10 years of Legal experience, he formerly worked in the Judiciary as a magistrate. Wameli therefore boosts of a Bar and Bench experience. He holds a Bachelor of Laws from Makerere University and Post Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from Law Development Centre.

Anthony has represented high profile persons in the High Court of Uganda, Criminal division, he is presently representing retired General Tumukunde in the High court. He has also represented Jamil Mukulu in the International Crimes Division. Anthony has also represented Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi. He is passionate about human rights and rule of law.

 

Anne Karungi

Anne Karungi practices law with Muwema & Co. Advocates and Solicitors, she boosts of over 10 years’ experience in commercial law, Litigation and Constitutional law. She holds a Bachelor of Laws and a Post Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice. She has received specialized trainings from the International Centre for Arbitration and Mediation.

Anne has developed a niche in Joint ventures, Mergers and Acquisitions and Intellectual Property. She formerly practiced law with Bitangaro & Co. Advocates.

Anne has been part of the governing council of the Uganda Law society as council representative for the central region since 2018.

 

Nelson Walusimbi

Nelson Walusimbi is the Founding and Managing partner at Walusimbi & Co. Advocates with over 10 years legal experience in corporate and commercial practice. He has further more developed a niche in litigation, conveyancing and debt collection.

He holds a Bachelor of Laws from Makerere University, Post Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice and is currently pursuing a Master of Laws in Corporate and Insolvency Law from Nottingham University in the United Kingdom.

 

Bernard Oundo

Bernard Oundo is the Managing partner at Oundo & Co Advocates he formerly worked with Ministry of Finance, Planning and economic development before joining private legal practice.

He holds a bachelor of Laws (First class), Post Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice and a Master of laws (with a distinction) in Petroleum law and Policy from the University of Dundee and has received specialized training from Loughborough University. He is an alumnus of the Harvard Kennedy School Executive programme.

Oundo specializes in Project Finance, Public Private Partnerships and, Banking and Finance. He has advised government on the implementation on a number of projects in Uganda. He has previously served on a number of committees of the Uganda law society.
