Kansai Plascon Uganda Limited, Uganda’s largest paint company has donated 19,360 kilograms of soap valued at UGX50,000,000 to the government of Uganda’s anti-Covid-19 taskforce.

Company officials; Mr. Santosh Gumte and Mr. Tyron Immelmann, the Managing Director and Marketing Manager respectively, handed over the relief package this morning at the Office of the Prime Minister, to Hon. Mary Karooro Okurut, the Minister in Charge of General Duties in the Office of the Prime Minister.

Hon Karooro also chairs the 15-member committee in charge of the Covid-19 response fund. Also, present to receive the relief package, was Dr. Ian Clarke, a member of the committee and Hon. Robinah Nabbanja, Uganda’s Health State Minister, General Duties.

Santosh Gumte, on behalf of his company, applauded the Government of Uganda, under the leadership of H.E Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for the exemplary efforts in managing the disease, especially curtailing its spread. He said, his company’s donation of soap, was in support of the hygiene component in the prevention of the disease.

“Handwashing with soap and water is a simple yet effective measure against the Coronavirus which causes the disease, yet we know that for one reason or another during this crisis, some households may not be able to readily afford the soap because of competing needs. This is why we have decided to contribute to the hygiene drive that has been well elaborated by the president and the ministry of health,” he said.

He said that the soap, that is packaged in 1-kilogram bars, will benefit over 19,000 needy households, starting with slum areas in greater Kampala.

Tyron Immelmann, the Kansai Plascon Marketing Manager, said that at a prevention level, his company had invested in internal staff and customer education on prevention of the disease as well as on minimising the economic impact of the disease on the company’s stakeholders.

“Plascon is widely accepted as the trusted quality paint in Uganda with over 60% market share. Internally, we are working on plans to assist the paint industry, especially our dealers and customers to deal with the financial impact of the lockdown, with a goal of ensuring that they remain resilient and return stronger, to a vibrant paint and construction industry,” he said.

Dr. Ian Clarke, a renowned medical doctor reiterated the importance of breaking the chain of infection by continuing to practice the simple actions being emphasized by the Ministry of Health, such as washing hands with soap and water, keeping a social distance, and avoiding crowded places.
