A collage of the Journey to the Boardroom (JTB) 2025 cohort — bringing together portraits of Uganda’s emerging corporate leaders and governance champions. Each image reflects a step in their shared commitment to boardroom excellence and transformative leadership.

Every good business is as good as its board. Behind every thriving organisation are leaders who not only understand strategy but embody integrity, vision, and resilience. Yet for too long, the boardroom has remained an exclusive domain—guarded by tradition, inaccessible to many talented professionals eager to serve. Journey to the Boardroom (JTB) is changing that narrative. Born during the stillness of the COVID-19 lockdown, JTB has evolved into a bold, structured movement equipping Uganda’s next generation of board leaders through mentorship, exposure, and strategic governance training.

On Friday, April 25, 2025, the Grand Finale of the JTB 2025 Cohort marked a significant milestone—the culmination of months of deliberate preparation, self-discovery, and leadership growth. Inspired by governance icons such as Martin Aliker, Ian Fernandes, Japheth Katto, Strive Masiyiwa, and Miranda Naiman, these emerging leaders are ready to step into the boardrooms of the future.

At this point, you must be wondering: What is the Journey to the Boardroom?

A Movement Born in Unlikely Times

The idea for Journey to the Boardroom was not born in a boardroom. It was born in lockdown.

In 2020, while the world was confined indoors by the global COVID-19 pandemic, Janet Navvuga Bugembe was navigating her own internal reflection—on leadership, access, and legacy. At the time, she was serving as the Youth Coordinator for the Uganda Chapter of the International Federation of Business and Professional Women. A spirited WhatsApp discussion among women professionals about how to “adaptively add value to ourselves” during uncertain times sparked an unexpected fire.

“One of the topics we were handling… was ‘Dynamics of getting into boardrooms’. It was during this period that the concept of Journey to the Boardroom was born,” Janet recalls .

Instead of staying silent during the pause, she created a platform—initially through weekly virtual sessions—where seasoned leaders would demystify the world of governance. Guests included names such as Ann Jjuko (CEO, Stanbic Bank Uganda), Doris Akol (former URA Commissioner General), and Dr. Louis Kasekende (former Deputy Governor, Bank of Uganda), among others.

Janet Navvuga, Founder of Journey to the Boardroom (JTB), whose vision and leadership have shaped a new generation of board-ready leaders committed to excellence, integrity, and impactful governance.

These conversations, intimate and enlightening, soon attracted more than 100 professionals in just a year. But for Janet, this was never just about content—it was about impact. When she applied for the British Chevening Scholarship in 2021, she confidently shared Journey to the Boardroom as her flagship vision for systemic change.

“Our goal is to maximise the untapped talent pool of professionals and expose those who have accumulated experience in the corporate world without an understanding of how to navigate the boardroom space” .

Having previously spent six years leading The Mentorship Class—a youth empowerment initiative—Janet’s blueprint was rooted in mentorship, community, and global influence. Her Master’s in Corporate Governance and International Business Ethics from the UK provided her with the academic scaffolding to formalize the program.

“This approach was not solely about transforming individual lives; it was about cultivating networks that would serve as pillars of support for all program participants,” she explains.

And it worked.

From a seed sown in digital dialogue, Journey to the Boardroom is now a respected platform that grooms professionals for boardroom readiness—by combining exposure, mentorship, diversity, and structured learning.

“In a world where tradition and hierarchy have long defined leadership circles, Journey to the Boardroomemerges as a brand with a vision for a more inclusive and diverse leadership,” reads its manifesto .

Today, it offers not only a space to learn but also a “networking space within which professionals are introduced to experienced individuals with significant boardroom experience”, enabling the transfer of “knowledge and wisdom from experienced board members to the younger generation”.

What began as a moment of pause has evolved into a movement of purpose—transforming the leadership landscape one conversation, one cohort, and one boardroom at a time.

2025: A Cohort Defined by Icons and Purpose

At the heart of the Journey to the Boardroom (JTB) experience lies a simple but powerful idea: to prepare professionals not only to enter boardrooms, but to transform them. And in 2025, that purpose took on a new layer of symbolism.

This year’s JTB cohort was grouped into five clusters named after a trailblazing figure in African corporate governance. More than ceremonial, these group names are meant to anchor the leadership journeys of the cohort in the values and legacies of those who came before them. They are walking in the footsteps of giants, with a bold intention to create footprints of their own.

“We believe in removing the barriers that have kept professionals from boardroom tables,” reads the program’s official mission. “In a world where tradition and hierarchy have long defined leadership circles, Journey to the Boardroom emerges as a brand with a vision for a more inclusive and diverse leadership”.

Group 1 – Aliker Inc

This group was named in honour of Dr. Martin Aliker, the elder statesman of Uganda’s boardrooms and a towering figure in regional corporate governance. With over five decades of board service—including roles at Stanbic Bank Uganda, Uganda Clays Limited, and Nation Media Group—Dr. Aliker represents a legacy of integrity, diplomacy, and ethical stewardship. A trained dental surgeon who transitioned into business and public service, he exemplifies the rare blend of technical excellence and strategic governance acumen. “Aliker Inc” reflects his enduring influence on Uganda’s leadership landscape and challenges the cohort to embody timeless values in every boardroom they enter. As members of this group walk in the footsteps of Dr. Aliker, they are reminded that leadership is not just about occupying a seat at the table, but about elevating the standard of discourse, anchoring decisions in wisdom, and building institutions that outlast individuals.

Left to right: Strive Masiyiwa, Dr. Martin Aliker, and Japheth Katto — iconic figures whose leadership, governance excellence, and visionary impact continue to inspire the next generation of boardroom leaders.

Group 2 – Fernandez Circle

Named after Ian Fernandes, this group honours a seasoned financial services professional and entrepreneur whose impact spans banking, strategy, governance, and digital transformation across Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia. Ian co-founded Furaha Financial, a digital lending platform incubated by SC Ventures, aimed at providing purpose-driven loans to underbanked communities in Africa, with Uganda as its launch market. Before founding Furaha, Ian held senior leadership roles at Standard Chartered Bank, where he spearheaded the launch of 10 digital banks across Africa and Pakistan, expanded banking operations into Saudi Arabia and Egypt, and drove governance and efficiency programs across multiple markets. His experience includes private equity investments in South Asia’s financial and consumer sectors, and board directorships for Standard Chartered subsidiaries in Uganda, Tanzania, Côte d’Ivoire, and The Gambia. An INSEAD MBA graduate and Stanford GSB leadership alum, Ian represents visionary, strategic, and inclusive governance. Fernandez Circle challenges its members to embody his legacy—leading with innovation, global perspective, and a deep commitment to financial and social transformation.

Group 3 – Chiefs Vanguard

Named after Mr. Japheth Katto, FCCA, this group stands in the shadow of one of Uganda and East Africa’s most respected authorities in corporate governance. Mr. Katto is the Board Chairman of Stanbic Bank Uganda, a board member of East African Breweries Limited (EABL)—where he chairs the Corporate Governance Committee—and Chairman of Uganda Breweries Limited, a key subsidiary of EABL and Diageo plc. He is the Managing Partner of Japheth Katto Consult, a firm offering board selection, training, and evaluation services. As the first CEO of Uganda’s Capital Markets Authority, a role he held for 16 years, and a former Board Member of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC), Mr. Katto has played a pivotal role in shaping Uganda’s financial sector and governance landscape. He is a certified Commonwealth trainer in corporate governance, an adjunct faculty member at Strathmore Business School, and a published contributor to Uganda’s thought leadership on governance. His career spans over 40 years in financial services regulation, auditing, and governance advocacy across East Africa and the UK.

Group 4 – Strive On

Strive On was named after Strive Masiyiwa, a Zimbabwean-born entrepreneur, investor, and philanthropist whose impact spans over four decades and more than 40 countries. He founded iconic ventures such as Econet Wireless, Cassava Technologies, Liquid Intelligent Technologies, and Africa Data Centres, which have transformed telecommunications and digital infrastructure across Africa. Masiyiwa’s influence extends to the global boardroom, where he currently serves as a Non-Executive Director at Netflix, a Trustee of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and advisor to institutions like Bank of America and Stanford University. His leadership has earned him prestigious recognitions, including the W.E.B. Du Bois Medal from Harvard and election as an International Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Beyond business, Masiyiwa is a dedicated philanthropist and thought leader. Through Higherlife Foundation and Delta Philanthropies, he and his family have funded over 300,000 scholarships for African youth, while championing causes like education, food security, digital access, and rural transformation. A signatory to the Giving Pledge, Masiyiwa embodies purpose-driven leadership rooted in faith, service, and long-term vision. “Strive On” reflects his relentless pursuit of impact—encouraging this JTB group to lead with innovation, integrity, and a bold pan-African spirit that transcends the boardroom.

Group 5 – Naiman Group
Naiman Group is named in honour of Miranda Naiman, a Tanzanian leadership consultant, governance expert, and founder of Empower, one of East Africa’s leading human capital firms. With a background in psychology, theatre, and coaching, Miranda brings authenticity, emotional intelligence, and bold energy to the boardroom. A trusted advisor to executives and boards across the region, she is known for designing transformative leadership programmes and evaluations that challenge traditional governance models. Her work champions inclusive leadership, personal growth, and values-driven decision-making.

Beyond consultancy, Miranda is a TEDx speaker, columnist, and advocate for women in leadership. She inspires professionals to embrace vulnerability, lead with courage, and find strength in self-awareness. Naiman Group, named after her, reflects those ideals—purposeful, confident, and committed to building boardrooms defined by accountability, inclusion, and empathy. Her journey reminds the group that powerful leadership begins within and that transformation is rooted in showing up fully and authentically.

Each group serves as both a compass and a mirror, reminding participants of the values they aim to uphold, while reflecting the leadership they already carry within. Whether it’s ethical clarity, strategic boldness, or inclusive decision-making, every group cultivates a signature identity grounded in excellence.

Some of the distinguished trainers and speakers during the intensive Journey to the Boardroom training sessions. Clockwise from top: I&M Bank’s Sam Ntulume, Capital Markets Authority’s CEO Josephine Okui Ossiya, MultiChoice Uganda’s Hassan Saleh, Standard Chartered Bank’s Sanjay Rughani, Deposit Protection Fund Uganda’s CFO Dr. Michael Lugemwa, Bank of Uganda’s Director of Currency Christine Alupo, NSSF’s Company Secretary Tibayeita Agnes, and Governance Specialist & Pharma Entrepreneur Grace Munyirwa.

This symbolic structure also creates an environment where peer-to-peer growth is championed, competitiveness becomes collaborative, and learning is deeply personal.

By linking professional ambition to African boardroom icons, the 2025 cohort is not just being trained to lead—they’re being inspired to lead with purpose.

Why Now? Why This Matters

Uganda—and indeed Africa—stands at a generational crossroads. With over 77% of Uganda’s population under the age of 30, the future of leadership cannot be left to chance, tradition, or inherited privilege. Institutions, both public and private, are grappling with disruption: technological, generational, economic, and ethical. Yet the boardroom, the very heart of decision-making and governance, remains one of the most under-transformed spaces.

That is why Journey to the Boardroom (JTB) matters now more than ever.

JTB answers a critical question: Who is preparing the next generation to govern? It fills a systemic gap—one that has kept brilliant professionals out of boardrooms due to lack of access, mentorship, or understanding of the terrain. More than a leadership program, JTB is an intentional bridge between today’s board leaders and tomorrow’s changemakers.

“We believe in removing the barriers that have kept professionals from boardroom tables. In a world where tradition and hierarchy have long defined leadership circles, JTB emerges as a brand with a vision for a more inclusive and diverse leadership.” — JTB Manifesto

Lisa Chesney, MBE, and JTB Founder Janet Navvuga during the Grand Finale Dinner held on April 25, 2025 — celebrating the culmination of a transformative leadership and governance journey.

By exposing high-potential individuals to governance realities, pairing them with board mentors, and embedding them in a values-first learning ecosystem, JTB is helping organizations future-proof their boards—while empowering professionals to lead with integrity, skill, and vision.

It’s no longer enough to talk about diversity and inclusion. It’s time to build it—deliberately, strategically, and sustainably. That is what Journey to the Boardroom is doing. That is why this moment matters.

A Grand Finale—and a New Beginning

On Friday, April 25, 2025, the Journey to the Boardroom Cohort 2025 culminated in a memorable Grand Finale event. It was not merely a closing ceremony but a launchpad for Uganda’s next generation of boardroom leaders.

Participants, now equipped with knowledge, confidence, and networks, are stepping forward to take their seats at the table—armed with the legacy of Martin Aliker, the sharpness of Ian Fernandez, the structure of Japheth Kato, the vision of Strive Masiyiwa, and the authenticity of Miranda Naiman.

Having undergone months of mentorship, exposure, and transformational learning, participants now step confidently into a new chapter of their professional journeys. Armed with knowledge, networks, and sharpened leadership skills, they were ready to translate ambition into action and governance into real impact.
