Insurance Training College funds the refurbishing of teaching facilities at Natete’s Mackay College

To support the education sector and empower local schools, the Insurance Training College (ITC) of Uganda has kick-started a drive to mobilise insurance sector players and other well-wishers to invest in supporting Uganda’s education sector⏤ the core of national development.

The Insurance Training College (ITC) of Uganda was established in 1964 as the training arm of Uganda’s insurance sector. The College is recognised under the Insurance (Amendment) Act 2011, which came into force in 2011 as the Insurance Institute of Uganda (IIU) and by the Insurance Act 2017 which transformed the Institute into the Insurance Training College of Uganda, a public tertiary institution.

ITC is licensed by National Council for Higher Education (NHCE) and all its Programmes are accredited and recognised by the National Council of Higher Education(NCHE).

To launch the initiative, ITC made a donation of UGX30 million to Mackay Memorial College, a government-aided school located in Natete, on the outskirt of Kampala City. The school is known for its dedication to providing quality education despite limited resources and caters to many students from low-income backgrounds.

During the launch of the initiative, Saul Sseremba, the CEO/Principal at ITC said the choice of education as a sector to support is driven by a strong belief in the transforming power of education.

“This is only the beginning of our efforts to support secondary education. More resources will be provided to professional development programmes, which will encourage a culture of continuous learning and provide educators with the tools they need to offer high-quality education,” he added.

The donated resources will go towards improving infrastructure, upgrading educational resources, and expanding access to essential facilities at the school.

“This investment will substantially benefit students by allowing them to study in a more suitable setting and improving their overall learning experience. For example, Mackay College has a classroom block with a sinking roof, which puts hundreds of students’ lives in danger. There is also no internet connectivity, which limits access to quality, up-to-date study material and information for both students and teachers,” remarked Sseremba.

“Many schools such as Mackay Memorial College face various known challenges and it is up to us to either complain about the situation or try and do something about it. ITC has committed to doing whatever is within the organisation’s means to support schools in the community, one school at a time,” he added.
