The Insurance Institute of Uganda (IIU) is this year celebrating 50 years of its existence and is scheduled to host its first international conference slated for February 28, 2014, themed ‘Insurance, The Rise of a New Dawn – Managing Emerging Risks in a developing economy.

Our reporter talked to the Chairman, Governing Council Insurance Institute of Uganda, Mr.Geoffrey T. Kihuguru about IIU’s role in Uganda’s insurance sector over the past 50 years, future plans and the general outlook of Uganda’s insurance sector. Below are excerpts:
The Insurance Institute of Uganda is this year marking 50 years of existence. What is the Insurance Institute of Uganda all about and what is its mandate?
Established in 1964, the Insurance Institute of Uganda is the training arm of the insurance industry in Uganda whose mandate is to provide and maintain a central organization for the promotion of efficiency, progress, welfare, knowledge and general development among persons engaged or employed in the insurance business. Currently IIU boasts of a membership of over 70 corporate and over 1200 individual members. As per its mandate, the Institute conducts short term specialized training’s, proficiency courses and coordinates the professional exams for the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) and the Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance (ANZIIF).
To celebrate its 50th year in existence, the Institute is planning to host its first international conference. What is the main purpose of this conference?
This international IIU conference will create a platform for the insurance industry players to network and dialogue on how they can better tap into various opportunities such as oil exploration and mining, infrastructural development, public investment in infrastructure, the modernization of agricultural practices and the resurgence of the East African community. Participants will come from across the East African Community countries that include Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Southern Sudan and also representation will come from various insurance institutes that partner with IIU including: South Africa, Zimbabwe, Malawi, and the Chartered Insurance Institute of London.
