The Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU) has announced the winners of the award of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (CPA) scholarships for students who applied in September 2021.

Under the third cohort, only 10 beneficiaries were selected out of 206 applicants. The beneficiaries selected based on their performance in their final examinations are fresh graduates from both public and private universities.

At the event held at Protea Hotel by Marriott Kampala Skyz on Tuesday afternoon, ICPAU also launched the application entries for 2022.

Only students from chartered universities of Busitema University, Gulu University, Kabale University, Kyambogo University, Lira University, Makerere University, Mbarara University of Science & Technology, Mountains of the Moon University, Muni University, Soroti University, Bugema Adventist University, Islamic University, Kampala International University, Ndejje University, Nkumba University, Uganda Christian University and Uganda Martyrs University are eligible to apply.

The beneficiaries of the 3rd Cohort of CPA Scholarships include;

Ms. Amon Vinky from Lira University – Bachelor of Business Administration

Ms. Murungi Lyonah from Makerere University – Bachelor of Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management

Mr. Mwanje Lawrence from Mbarara University of Science and Technology – Bachelor of Science in Accounting and Finance

Ms. Nakasoma Carolyne Sharon from Kyambogo University – Bachelor of Science in Accounting and Finance

Ms. Nalugo Hanifah from Makerere University Bachelor of Science in Human Nutrition

Ms. Namwano Emmily from Uganda Martyrs University – Bachelor of Business Administration and Management

Mr. Nuwamanya Bruno from Mbarara University of Science and Technology – Bachelor of Science in Accounting and Finance

Mr. Okello Walter Haggard from Gulu University – Bachelor of Business Administration, and

Mr. Wochete Joseph from Makerere University – Bachelor of Commerce

CPA Derick Nkajja, the Chief Executive Officer of ICPAU revealed that the Institute’s scholarship package covers registration, annual renewal examinations fees, as well as study material.

He revealed that also, the institute has partnered with Glory Professional Consultants and Trainers and MAT ABACUS that will cover tuition fees.

“The beneficiary students must complete the course within two and a half years,” he said.

As part of the CPA learning framework; students are required to demonstrate their knowledge and skills through attaining practical experience, with the major fields being financial reporting, management, accounting, taxation, auditing, financial management, information Technology, insolvency practice, communication skills personal skills, and organisational skills.

Officiating at the event, CPA Dr. Hajj Twaha Kigongo Kaawaase, Partner at Sejjaaka Kaawaase & Co., Certified Public Accountants urged the beneficiaries to make better use of the opportunity and become better professional accountants.

“An accountant is a person who has gone through the training for professional accountancy, not necessarily the first degree in accounting. First degree gives you a foundation to becoming a professional accountant.”

Twaha, also the First Deputy Premier of Buganda Kingdom said that the course will open many opportunities for them once well utilized.

“Accountants can fit in any environment provided there is money. Any institution that has an in and out flow of funds, there is a need for an accountant.”

He also encouraged them to always equip themselves with professional code of ethics, particularly integrity in order to keep their names clean.

“If you are not truthful you will end in jail,” he reminded them, adding that “be known by works but only good works.”

CPA Constant Othieno Mayende, the President of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda told the beneficiaries that “This is a life opportunity that will usher you into the accountancy professional world.”

He said that the primary goal of the Student Scholarship Programme which was launched in 2019 is to nurture talent among the young people by providing an opportunity to pursue the CPA course.

Mayembe revealed that so far, twenty (20) beneficiaries from the first and second cohorts, were enrolled on the CPA course but their studies were disrupted by the effects of COVID-19, “but nonetheless, there is progress.”

Ms. Mary Carolyne Najjemba – Makerere University

CPA Nkajja noted that professionalism in accountancy is key to enhancing good governance and accountability in organisations.

“The CPA course builds on foundational education to, impart technical and professional skills as well as the required values, attitudes and behaviour,” he said. “Therefore, it is important that all accountants acquire these skills, if they are to enhance their competence,” he added.

Since the inception of the programme, 30 beneficiaries have been awarded scholarships.

ICPAU is the national professional accountancy organization, established in 1992 by an Act of Parliament, now the Accountants Act, 2013.
