Uganda is one of the countries faced with complex challenges that range from unsustainable resource use practices to high poverty levels, which inevitably lead to environmental degradation, habitat degradation and biodiversity loss.
Addressing these challenges, Mihingo, a luxurious family-owned lodge in a magical setting adjacent to Lake Mburo National Park resorted to use green practices to conserve the nature and transform the residents.
The lodge heats all its water, makes electricity, and powers all their fridges and freezers using the sun.

Mihingo catches all the rain water on the rocks in a 200,000 litre water tank and also uses the run-off from the large roof area at the stables. They grow own herbs and salads in their small organic kitchen garden.
They buy as much locally produced as possible including milk, tomatoes and onions from the surrounding farms and only buy special vegetables that they can’t buy locally from an organic farm in Mukono district.
Others include;
- Recycling general lodge waste – turn bottle tops into funky animals, and give their empty bottles to Paper Craft who turn them into beautiful necklaces and earrings.
- Decanting all drinking water from 20 litre bottles to avoid waste of more than 10,000 small plastic bottles a year.
- Buying all candles from The Candle Light Foundation that was set up to help street girls find a way to earn money.
- Selling as many locally produced Ugandan crafts in their craft shop.
- Compensating farmers for livestock killed by leopard and hyena.
Perched high on a rocky kopje, whose pre-Cambrian granite boulders were formed over 500 million years ago, Mihingo has spectacular views over a vast savannah landscape. Designed to blend in with its fragile surroundings, this environmentally friendly lodge offers comfort, relaxation and the experience of being at one with nature.
The lodge has an infinity pool that overlooks the valley below where buffalo, eland, impala, warthogs, bush buck and zebra can be seen at the waterhole. On the rocks you may have the rare chance of seeing the resident family of Klipspringers.

To further enhance your experience of wild Africa, Mihingo is the only lodge in Uganda to offer daytime and overnight horse safaris into the national park.
They have 12 luxury, tented rooms designed to provide guests with privacy and tranquillity. Each room has its own unique charm and character, whether it is nestled in forest, overlooking the lake, perched on a rocky outcrop or down by the water hole.
Each spacious canvas tent is equipped with en-suite bathrooms, hot and cold running water, showers, and flush loos. The rooms have been sensitively designed to complement the local environment with great attention to detail. The doorways are framed by stunning pieces of dead olive wood found on the land.
