Doris Akol, the former Uganda Revenue Authority Commissioner-General has joined international law firm, Dentons Uganda office as a Partner, CEO East Africa can exclusively reveal.
A source has confirmed to CEO East Africa that details of her joining the law firm are being finalized and shall be announced anytime soon.
With over 15,000 lawyers, Dentons is the largest law firm in the world. Dentons was the first international law firm in Africa with the establishment of Dentons Cairo in 1964. The firm has over 200 lawyers in 13 locations across Africa, including Uganda.
In Uganda, Dentons is registered as Kyagaba & Otatiina Advocates. The firm was founded in early 2019 by a team of five lawyers; David Mpanga, Dennis Otatiina, Isaac Kyagaba, John Musiime, and Pearl Nyakabwa. The team has combined experience of over 50 years, advising and representing some of the leading brands in Uganda. The firm is a full-service law firm, which provides services across various sectors and practices including, Banking and Finance, Construction, Corporate, Energy, Litigation & Dispute Resolution, Intellectual Property, Labor and Employment Law, Restructuring and Securitization and Tax.
Akol, brings to Dentons, over 25 years of tax law expertise, most, if not all of it gained from Uganda Revenue Authority where she has worked for over two decades.

She joined URA in May 1995 and rose through the ranks to become the Commissioner Legal Services and Board Secretary. In November 2014, she was appointed the Commissioner-General, a role she served until March 2020.
In the 5 years she was Commissioner-General, Doris grew tax revenue by more than 83percent from UGX9.9 trillion in FY2014/15 to UGX 16.6 trillion in FY 2018/19- cumulatively collecting UGX65 trillion. She also nearly doubled the tax register, growing it from 763,150 taxpayers to 1,487,354 at the end of FY2018/19.
Tax to GDP ratio increased from 12.84 percent in FY 2014/15 to 15.11 percent in FY 2018/19 above the NDPII target of 14.90 percent.
Her legacy at URA will forever be inked in the iconic 22-storeyed URA Towers, the headquarters of the revenue authority that was finished under her leadership, on time and on budget.
Doris holds a Bachelor of Law from Makerere University and a Postgraduate Diploma in Financial Management from Uganda Management Institute. She also holds an MBA in Leadership Innovation and Change from the York St. John University in the United Kingdom, as well as an LLM in International Business, majoring in Trade and Tax Law from McGill University in Canada. She is a Chartered Secretary and Governance Professional Fellow ICSA.
