Singer Joseph Mayanja’s current headache isn’t just the ‘arrogance’ of fellow artiste Bebe Cool whose lists of chart-topping musicians has left him angry. There is a much bigger and costly matter he has to grapple with. Dr Jose Chameleone, as Mayanja is popularly known, faces a Shs53 million legal suit filed by a music promoter.

Before the High Court in Kampala, South African-based Zaina Namuwonge, who also trades as Sezana Promotions, claims that, in 2015, she made a Shs25 million down payment to Chameleone after entering into agreement for the singer to hold a three-day concert dubbed, ‘Wale-Wale’ in Pretoria, Cape town and Durban, in South Africa.

The CEO website has obtained two copies of receipts by Chameleone’s Leone Island confirming payments made by Namuwonge in June and September 2015.

In a civil suit No. 156 of 2018, Namuwonge says she advanced another Shs12.5 million to Chameleone after the singer convinced her that him and his crew needed to obtain emergency passports and visas having lost their travel documents.

Namuwonge says she made hotel reservations for the singer and his crew but to her dismay, the singer switched off his known phone contacts on the eve of the flight, making efforts to trace for him futile.

Now, through her lawyers, Lukwago and Company Advocates, Namuwonge is seeking to recover her money and court orders compelling Chameleone to pay damages for breach of contract, damaged reputation and property, including chairs and banners.

Chameleone has other cases in court for similar offences. Two years ago,the singer earned the wrath of revellers in Masaka District when he made a no-show at a pre-booked concert, leading the angry fans to damage concert seats and other equipment.
