Ecobank Kenya has named Mrs. Rebecca M. Mbithi as its new Managing Director, succeeding Mrs. Josephine Anan-Ankomah, who has fully transitioned to a regional leadership role within Ecobank Group.
Mbithi’s appointment takes effect on 9 February 2026, subject to regulatory approval by the Central Bank of Kenya.
The leadership change was communicated to clients under the title Leadership Transition at Ecobank Kenya, with the bank noting that the move forms part of a broader strategy by Ecobank Group to sharpen leadership focus in Kenya and across the wider Central, Eastern and Southern Africa region.
Anan-Ankomah has stepped down from the Managing Director position to focus fully on her responsibilities as Regional Executive for Central, Eastern and Southern Africa. In that capacity, she will continue to oversee 17 markets across the region, including Kenya.
Ecobank said the transition follows three years of focused efforts to strengthen the bank’s financial position and enhance its capacity to support customer growth. The group said it is now positioning the Kenya franchise to deepen its market presence and leverage Kenya’s strategic role within the East African Community and the broader region.
Mbithi brings more than 20 years of executive leadership experience across multiple industries, including Kenya’s financial services sector. Ecobank highlighted her track record in leading a successful turnaround as Chief Executive Officer of Family Bank.
The bank said the leadership transition has been carefully planned to ensure continuity and maintain seamless service for clients. Anan-Ankomah will work closely with Mbithi during the handover period, while relationship teams, service structures and day-to-day banking arrangements will remain uninterrupted.
Ecobank reaffirmed its commitment to supporting clients and businesses across Kenya and the wider region as it enters its next phase of growth under new local leadership.
