Daniel Ogong, the Head of Marketing at Stanbic Bank

‘’Why are we using Sheebah as a brand ambassador?’’

‘’The entire marketing budget should be given to Uncle Mo. He can achieve more than all these billboards and adverts they are wasting money on.’’

‘’Do we even have the right marketing people? They speak good English, but we don’t feel their impact in the market’’.

Marketers in every organisation are bombarded with such sentiments as everybody believes they know what it takes to execute excellent marketing.

Daniel Ogong, the Head of Marketing at Stanbic Bank, says the only sure way marketers can insulate themselves against such corporate shenanigans is to make a strong case for their chosen direction and back it up with results.

‘’Marketers must have a strong ‘why’ for their strategies and demonstrate the value that their work brings to the organisation,’’ Ogong explains.

Ogong further explains that strategic thinking and performance measurement are some of the key skills that every marketer must have to thrive in the boardroom and marketplace.

‘’A marketer’s job has no room for error. The strategy must be sound, and activities backed by very good reasoning. The execution must be excellent, and most importantly, all marketing activities must be tracked for impact on the organisation’s bottom-line.’’

Ogong has decades of experience in the C-Suite and explains that today’s marketers must be alive to trends that are driving conversations in the boardroom.

‘’Sustainability is a very important issue for organisations today. Brands are being tasked to create real impact in the communities where they operate.’’

As brands strive to articulate their identities and marketers work to rise the corporate ladder, Ogong invites you to attend the forthcoming Annual CMO Breakfast scheduled to take place on March 22nd, 2024, at the Kampala Serena Hotel.

The CMO Breakfast is an annual think pad organised by Uganda Marketers Society (UMS) that brings together over 120 C-Level Marketers and Heads of Marketing. The forum provides an opportunity for sharing thoughts, learnings, and experiences of key trends, themes, and ideas shaping the profession.

The theme for this year is ‘Executive Marketing Leadership: Building the next CMOs’, and will address the growing concern that marketers in the country have a skills and competence gap that is preventing them from taking on regional leadership opportunities.

Seasoned marketers Baker Magunda, the Chairperson Board of Directors, Stanbic Uganda Holdings and Suzan Nsibirwa, the Managing Director, Nation Media Group Uganda are the keynote speakers. Immaculate Ngulumi, the Chief Manager, Marketing and Branding, at Centenary Bank will moderate the discussion.
