Daniel Kalinaki, the General Manager – Editorial at Nation Media Group (NMG) Uganda and one of the country’s most prominent newsroom leaders, is set to retire from the media house effective April 1, 2026, according to an internal email seen by this publication.
In the communication addressed to staff, NMG confirmed that it had accepted Kalinaki’s request to retire, bringing to a close a career spanning more than two decades at the group.
Kalinaki has been with NMG for over two decades, holding several senior editorial roles at the Daily Monitor. He became a News Editor in 2003 before being promoted in 2008 to Managing Editor at the age of 28, becoming the youngest person to hold the position in the publication’s history.
Over the years, he played a central role in shaping editorial strategy and newsroom operations in Uganda. In addition to his leadership at the Daily Monitor, Kalinaki also headed the Kampala Bureau of The East African newspaper.
He edited the regional publication while simultaneously overseeing editorial operations in Uganda during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the internal communication.
The email described Kalinaki’s career as “illustrious,” noting that he led teams that broke landmark stories, spearheaded the convergence of editorial operations, and drove digital transformation efforts within the organisation.
He is also credited with mentoring journalists both within Uganda and across the region.
“Daniel’s retirement is richly deserved, and we wish him the best in his future endeavours,” the internal memo stated.
Nation Media Group said the appointment of new leadership would be announced in due course.
Kalinaki’s departure marks the end of an era at NMG Uganda, where he has been widely regarded as one of the most influential newsroom leaders of his generation.
