The Kingdom, in a statement, has said it looks to leverage the new William Sekabembe-led Board’s wealth of diverse perspectives and expertise to continue the Kingdom-owned telco’s growth and success.

The Katikkiro of Buganda Owek. Charles Peter Mayiga, on 26, April 2023, at Bulange Mengo, inaugurated the new Board of Directors to oversee the performance of K2 Telecom, a Kingdom-owned telco.

The 10-member board with a diverse skills-set is chaired by William Sekabembe, a renowned banking executive who is also the Executive Director & Chief Commercial Officer of dfcu Bank, one of Uganda’s largest banks. 

The other members of the new Board are Mr. Michael. K. Mwebe, Mr. Francis Buwule, Prince Crispin Jjunju, Dr. Rose Nakasi, Mr. Robert Kasozi, Mr. Swaib Kyanda K, Mr. David Moore Balaka, Mr. John Kitenda, and Mr. Arthur Mawanda. 

“The Board members bring a wealth of diverse perspective and expertise, positioning them to tackle new challenges and achieve significant accomplishments,” the Kingdom said in a statement, adding: “This appointment marks a new chapter for K2 Telecom, as the company looks to continue its growth and success under the guidance of a talented and experienced Board of Directors.”

Posting on his Facebook page, the Katikkiro said, the new Board would “help the Kingdom to deepen K2’s customer experience and growth, as well as enhance the people’s love and confidence in the Kingdom and their King”.

“I warmly welcome you all onboard and I wish you success,” he wrote in Luganda, the Kingdom’s official language.  

K2 Telecom was launched in December 2012 and is the official telecom company of the Buganda Kingdom. The Company offers a comprehensive suite of products and services, including GPS tracking & Fleet management and K2 bulk SMS solutions. 

William Sekabembe, the board chair is a respected business leader with over 24 years of banking experience which amongst other key skills, includes business strategy design, execution and review, banking product development and management, development finance, risk modelling, liquidity and balance sheet management, mergers and acquisitions as well as organisational redesign. 

Prior to working for dfcu Bank, he also worked for other major financial services brands such as  Stanbic Bank, Absa Bank Uganda (formerly Barclays Bank) and Standard Chartered Bank.

He holds an  Executive Master of Business Administration (MBA)  from the prestigious International Institute for Management Development (IMD), Lausanne, SWITZERLAND.  He also holds a Master of Arts in Economic Policy and Planning and a  Bachelor of Science in Economics and Statistics from Makerere University. 

An alumnus of King’s College Budo, Sekabembe, has also completed various professional development courses such as the Effective Director Program,  CEO Apprenticeship Program and The Advanced Leadership Development Program from the Strathmore Business School as well as the Future of Banking Innovation Program from the Amsterdam Institute of Finance. 

He also sits on the boards of the Uganda Warehouse Receipt System, the Agribusiness Development Centre and the Jubilee Health Insurance Company of Uganda.
