Chipper Cash users across Africa have been left stranded after the popular fintech app suffered a major service disruption caused by a global cloud outage. The company confirmed the incident on its official X (formerly Twitter) account earlier today.
“Hello! We understand that you may be facing challenges accessing our app at the moment and we sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this might have caused. This issue stems from a global service outage being experienced by our cloud hosting provider,” Chipper Cash posted.
While assuring users that the issue did not originate from Chipper Cash itself, the company acknowledged it was affecting their ability to keep the app operational. “We are closely monitoring this with our partner to ensure a prompt fix. Please rest assured that you will be notified once services are restored,” the statement added.
But even as the company worked to restore service, social media exploded with angry posts from frustrated users facing critical disruptions to their financial activities.
“I had to borrow money today to eat o. Please you guys should fix up before tomorrow morning,” one user wrote, highlighting the real-life consequences of the outage.
“So till when please? I’m stuck and stranded,” lamented another.
Others expressed fear over their funds. One distressed user posted,
“I have over $7,000 on your app. It’s now closed and you didn’t first make a refund for my funds. You just closed it without a reason.”
Some even threatened to abandon the platform permanently.
“If I use this app again, make God punish me,” an enraged user declared.
Another wrote, “Getting my funds out immediately.”
One particularly damning complaint alleged that unresolved transaction issues predated the current outage.
“On 12th May, I sent ₦299,700 to a First Bank account from my Chipper Cash. The money never arrived and they haven’t told me where my funds are.”
For many, the app’s unavailability meant the inability to make urgent payments, buy essentials like gas, or run ad campaigns.
“I couldn’t fill my gas today because of you,” one user said, while another added, “I have to fund my Facebook account for my ads.”
Chipper Cash has since issued a security alert urging users to avoid clicking suspicious links or sharing sensitive information like OTPs, PINs, or passwords, emphasizing that official updates will only be shared via its verified channels.
Although some users have reported partial restoration of services, with comments like “CHIPPER IS WORKING PERFECTLY NOW” and “After 17 good hours I can login,” widespread skepticism remains. A growing number of customers are demanding compensation, transparency, and stronger contingency measures for the future.
This latest crisis puts Chipper Cash under renewed scrutiny as questions emerge about the platform’s resilience and crisis communication. For now, users across the continent remain on edge, hoping their money—and trust—isn’t lost in the cloud.
This is a developing story.
